Keys to Practice
Over the next few weeks, we will focus on aspects of our Zen practice which attune us to the call of the Valley Spirit in the exquisite weave of life.
This week we begin with Hongzhi’s exhortation, “Attention!” Hongzhi, the compiler of the Book of Serenity, adds this one word to each of its 100 cases.
This “Attention!” is the whole of our practice. In it, Hongzhi calls us to find refuge in what the moment has to offer. When we dive into our lives, we find the preciousness in the here, the unbelievable beauty in the now. Each element of practice—zazen, walking meditation, bringing the koan to meditation and life—calls us this way.
This Thursday, we’ll meditate with Linji’s koan:
Whatever confronts you, don’t believe it.
When something appears, shine your light on it.
Have confidence in the light that is always working inside you.
We will practice with attention that ushers us to the present, into the vastness, into the beauty and wonder of what is here; nothing added, nothing taken away.
—David Parks
Come join us Thursday at 4pm PDT, for koan meditation, a dharma talk, and conversation. Register to participate. All are welcome.
I hope you will join us.
