SUNDAY ZEN: Hanging from a Branch by Your Teeth! Predicament Koan 2 with John Tarrant & Friends
September 11, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Free – $10John Tarrant takes up a series of predicament koans, on Sundays, for a few weeks.
Meaning a small path into the Dao, a class on predicaments.
Predicament koans match the perilous and lunatic quality of life when everything is changing. I am plunged into the situation. My jaw hurts, my arms wave around, and I am not only desperate, but lost. The predicament doesn’t even make sense—if I am holding on by my teeth, my arms ought to be able to find something to grasp. But no, it’s not so. Even making sense will not help. I’m on the edge and flailing, about to fall.
KOAN 2:
You are hanging from a branch by your teeth.
Your arms can’t touch a branch.
Your feet cannot find the trunk.
Someone appears beneath the tree and asks:
“What is the meaning of Bodhidharma coming from the West?”
If you do not answer, you fail the questioner.
If you do answer, you lose your life. What will you do?
There is a lot to be said for turning towards your predicament, and entering it without reservation. “Ah this is the best predicament for me! I shall turn toward it and discover many things.” The locked gate opens.
Join us Sunday, and we’ll see about that gate.
—John Tarrant
Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.
