A student asked Baling, “What is the blown-hair sword?”
Baling said, “Each branch of coral holds up the light of the moon.” —BCR Case 100
Yuanwu says of this phrase,
This is before light and after annihilation, occupying the heartland alone, without any equal.
Moonlight is mysterious, a realm in which transformation occurs, and has always been a symbol for those interested in the nature of mind. And coral is an image of totality: each polyp, each hummingbird, each mouse, and each falling leaf shares our nature.
So, moonlight is both uncanny and also it keeps things serene and outside of the world of consequences. Many temples have the feel of moonlit peace and quiet extending in many directions.
Join us this Sunday morning for a taste of moonlight.
—John Tarrant
Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.
—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI
