Surprise unmakes the world. Perhaps it’s better to say it unmakes us. How large the world gets when we are surprised.
When we pay attention, every single moment is a surprise. The world steps forward, shimmering.
The old Zen saying is that expecting things is like eating painted cake.
When we are not expecting something, people to be nice to each other at Xmas, for example, what actually happens can be wonderful. When we are not looking, that’s when our lives change.
Let’s be surprised.

Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
