TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: Fayan’s Hairsbreadth

REGISTER
Fayan asked Xiushan, “‘If there is the tiniest separation, it’s the distance between heaven and earth.’ How do you understand that?”
Xiushan said, “If there is the tiniest separation, it’s the distance between heaven and earth.”
Fayan said, “If that’s your understanding, you have not realized it yet.”
Xuishan said, “It’s like that for me. What is it like for you?”
Fayan said, “If there is the tiniest separation, it’s the distance between heaven and earth.”
Xiushan bowed.
—Book of Serenity Case 17
Last week’s koan about Magu comes to mind: There was a hair’s breadth difference between what he presented to Changqing and what he then presented to Nanquan. Then there’s Fayan’s “god of fire seeks fire,” and how there was a hair’s breadth difference between the way the student said it and how Fayan said it.
Then there’s Fayan with Dizang and the hair’s breadth difference between Dizang saying, “The boulder is in the mind,” and Fayan saying, “The boulder is in the mind.” And there’s when Fayan pointed at the blinds and two monks raised them, and Fayan said, “One gains, one loses.”
There was a hair’s breadth difference there, too.
Then there’s the way my spell-checker kept writing “hair’s breath” instead of “hair’s breadth,” and the inquiry that ensued.
See you on Tuesday.
