TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: Yangshan Plants His Hoe

Guishan asked Yangshan, “Where have you come from?”
Yangshan said, “I’ve come from the fields.”
“How many people are in the fields?”
Yangshan planted his hoe in the ground and stood with his hands clasped.
Guishan said, “Lots of people are cutting water mallows on South Mountain.”
Yangshan picked up his hoe and left.

“Where have you come from?” is a frequently asked question in koans. Sometimes it seems like the teacher just wants to know where the person came from and sometimes the teacher seems to want to know something deeper than that. How do you tell the difference? In this conversation between Guishan and Yangshan neither of them seems to have any difficulty in knowing which is which. As a matter of fact, they were so much on the same page that they co founded the first of the five houses of Chan of the Tang Dynasty.
Being able to flow back-and-forth seamlessly between form and emptiness is the integration of practice into our lives. As is Yangshan’s picking up his hoe and going to South Mountain.
