This Thursday we will continue our journey with the great Horse Master Mazu.
He once said, “The whole meaning of your life rests in the current matter.”
This koan hits me deep. I look over my day: Opening my eyes in the morning—the current matter: this. A trip to the bagel shop, the first bite of my everything bagel, the first sip of coffee—this. I went to see my doctor today and she sees reason for a referral to the cardiologist—this. The pesky wax that the nurse tried to coax out of my ear—the current matter: this. Each moment, my life, just as it is, here and now.
I look for reasons, for meaning, for certainty, and I get just this moment, the current matter. It is all right here. The meaning? Hardly something to talk about, no speculation or abstraction needed. In this moment, heart-mind opens in a gesture of welcome, here, now—the current matter: this.
