You get the picture: Yunmen is seated at tea time, a low table before him. On the table there is a teapot, cups and a small plate of rice cakes. Between sips of tea, a student says to him, “What is the teaching that goes beyond the buddhas and ancestors?
Rather than give a detailed answer replete with explanations, metaphysics and theories, Yunmen eschews the esoteric, the special, and turns the student’s attention to the right here, a lowly rice cake.
