THURSDAY ZEN: The Ox Comes Along with No Effort Required with David Parks

February 9 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Free – $10

Ox Herding Series #5: Taming the Ox

If he does keep the whip and rope near at hand
the ox will soon seek out the nearest mud wallow.
But care for it properly, and it becomes gentle, clean;
it will follow the oxherd willingly, the rope gone slack.

With awakening, what is the place of effort in our continuing walk along life’s way? On the one hand, the poem seems to suggest that practice is required, that the whip and rope will be required to keep the ox on the Way. On the other hand, ropes and fetters and nose rings are not necessary. Our awakening has been with us from the beginning.

As we meet our thoughts, feelings, and the world with a welcoming kindness, there is a gentleness in our practice. Things are more clear and no more effort is required; the ox coming right along. From this point on, as we walk the ox path, we find that we are willing for the Dao to lead us along on life’s Way.
