SUNDAY ZEN with John Tarrant & Friends: Into the Crucible

A student asked Dongshan, “When cold and heat come, how can we avoid them?”
Dongshan said, “Why don’t you go to the place where there is no cold or heat?”
The student asked, “Where’s the place with neither cold nor heat?”
Dongshan said, “When it’s cold, the cold kills you. When it’s hot, the heat kills you.”

Things are changing quickly in our world. As the old arrangements fall apart, what we can do is have a real, spiritual life.
We just printed our beautiful new sutra books and included a quote from Basho, “Never think that your life doesn’t count.”
It’s good to have a connection to the great matter. A true inner life shows us our place in the universe.
We hold the center and the vastness.
Just as the daffodils of February do.
Join us on Sunday.

Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.
