SUNDAY ZEN: Invoking the Light: A New Year’s Eve Meditation Revel with John Tarrant, Allison Atwill, Tess Beasley & Friends
December 31, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
Free – $10At the end of the year we’re falling asleep and waking up again.
The old boat is sailing off laden with its gifts and sorrows, and the New Year—who knows what it will bring, what we will discover, what new fear will confront us and what we will love?
All we know is that we are companions on the way and that it is good to be here, it is wonderful in fact. Each moment carries its piece of eternity and I am glad to have you as companions. Basho the poet had a good feel for the moments that end and begin the year.
A cold rain starting
and no hat—
so?
Another year gone—
hat in hand,
sandals on my feet.
New Year’s Day,
eating
raw fish
When the winter chrysanthemums go,
there’s nothing to write about but radishes
New Year’s Day
The monkey
wears a monkey mask
In order to wake up we need to fall asleep, to surrender to the great current that we know little about and which we cannot control or direct.
The deer move silently in the twilight, the trees wave their bare, thin limbs, the sun offers a rim of sullen fire at the horizon. Then the marvelous appears. We can step forward into lives we have not known before.
—John Tarrant
Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.
Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
—John Tarrant, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley
