Guishan asked Yangshan, “Suppose that out of the blue, someone asks you, ‘All sentient beings only have karmic consciousness, boundless and with no foundation to rely on.’ How would you conduct an inquiry into this?”
Yangshan said, “If a student like that came, I’d call, ‘Hey so and so!’
When the student turns his head, then I say, ‘What is it?’
Then I’d wait while she thinks about it.
Then I’d say, ‘Not only is karmic consciousness boundless but also there is no foundation to rely on.’”

Oh, man. My mind the past few days has been a wreck! It gnaws on itself, chases out after things, and constantly generates the least helpful theories possible about what’s going on in my life.
I got sick on the day my parents came to visit, my 5–year–old kicked me out of my bed for the second night in a row, and now my cats’ automatic litter box has gone haywire.
It feels like someone has taken the carefully arranged Scrabble board of my thoughts and dumped it upside–down.
So what’s the remedy, Doctor? What can you prescribe me?
Chaos! Disorder! Nothing to rely on!
