SUNDAY ZEN: Gifts from the Far Ocean – with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends
The Kuling came from the far ocean. It looked like a sea bird but was really a ghost.
One day it landed on the island of Pulap and spoke to the daughter of the chief there.
It said, “I have eaten all the people living on the Marshall islands, and I’ll eat everyone here too unless you feed me until I am full.” The brave girl gathered cooked taro and coconut milk and fed it to the Kuling. Its hunger now sated, the Kuling said, “Thank you for feeding me. Now I will teach you the sacred art of navigation.”
Like the chief’s daughter, we live in a world beyond our understanding. There can be a tendency to steel the heart against fear, but to meet life without guile leaves us open to receiving all manner of unexpected aid. Attending to what is here now might be everything.
