SUNDAY ZEN: The Goose in the Bottle with John Tarrant & Friends

Late summer is immense, the party is beginning to end, harvest is beginning, thin trucks drive up and down all night in the vineyards with cyclops lights, the garden is leggy as if the plants were on a reckless adventure. The year turns like a great being. Simplicity and modesty are in the wings, and perhaps we can begin to feel their appeal.
We naturally want to rise up above our difficulties, but the Way, like the season, turns out to be down and into the heart of what is darker and hard to understand. So, we start with predicaments. The role of the guide is to accompany people, so if we’re helping people, that’s where we start, too.
Koans are both gates and predicaments. Here’s a predicament koan:
The Goose in the Bottle
A woman raised a goose in a bottle, and it grew, and she wanted to get it out of the
bottle. How will you get the goose out of the bottle?
It’s not so hard to say the ways we might be in a bottle. Buddha’s palace was his bottle. A marriage can be that. A job too.
But how do we get out?
Join us on Sunday?
Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.
