SUNDAY ZEN: Refuge – No Escape Hatch Needed with John Tarrant & Allison Atwill

In Zen, the hard parts of life are well advertised by the Buddha: sickness, old age, and death. They are reasons for practice—not for us to be intimidated, and not to waste the gift of life in fear and sorrow.
Though it is less well-advertised, there is a secret door into summer and calm and welcome. The door of refuge is a deep structure in the human psyche. In all cultures, it expresses an inmost desire and request.
Refuge declares an ancient yearning to be loyal to life, to love what we are given including those hard bits, to find that door into the place where the birds are singing.
—John Tarrant & Allison Atwill
Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday.
We love it when you join us.
Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
—John Tarrant, Allison Atwill, & all of us at PZI
