Four Sundays: August 6, 13, 20, & 27

In this four-part series, we’ll lean into the dog days of Summer and explore what the old Chinese masters coined as wu wei, or the high art of doing nothing. We’ll find our own spot under the rose-apple tree and perhaps discover how awakening appears everywhere when we forget to hold it off.

A treasury official retired and sought out Wuzu to learn about Zen.
Wuzu said, “When you were young, did you read a poem which went something like,

‘She calls to her maid, “Little Jade!” not because she wants something
but just so her lover will hear her voice.’

The official said, “Yes, I read it.”
Wuzu said, “That is very near to Zen.”

At 4:00 a.m. the sky claps and rain pours on the metal roof until dawn. The Eastern Phoebes cry pheee-beeeeeee as the sun appears, and the coffee machine gurgles and sighs as it fills the house with morning.

“Isn’t this the sound?” Yuanwu asks his teacher.
“I share your joy,” answers Wuzu.

Wherever we are, we hear it. Horns and sirens blare, finches bicker, an old cat snores and chitters as he twitches and dreams. Wind rustles through the oaks, noses whistle, freezers hum. Meditation becomes a way of listening to the great song of the 10,000 things, and a realizing that it can only be heard through intimacy with our very own lives and hearts.

Join us this Sunday. We’ll be flush with koans, stories, musicians and life.

Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.

Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday.
We love it when you join us.
