Taking up precepts is taking up a willingness to be surprised—by our own embedded beliefs, by our often unrecognized capacities to help and to harm, and by the very nature of awakening and life itself.
The Bodhisattva Vows are not rules to follow, nor are they concerned with morality as a set of standards that aim to define or control a particular culture or part of life. Instead, they reveal with exquisite precision where and how we identify with and defend a fixed view—dividing the Great Body of Reality into what does and does not belong—and how we separate from our own boundless original heart-mind, the very heart-mind of the universe itself.
