SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends: The Stone Woman Calls Us Back
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nA monk asked Hongzhi\, “What about the ones who’ve gone?”\nHongzhi said\, “White clouds rise to the top of the valleys\, blue peaks lean into the empty sky.”\nThe monk asked\, “What about the ones who return?”\nHongzhi said\, “Heads covered in white hair\, they leave the cliffs and valleys. In the dead of night they descend through the clouds to the market stalls.”\n“What about the ones who neither come nor go?”\n“The stone woman calls them back from their dream of the world.” \n—PZI Miscellanous Koans\, Case 34 \nLeaving the world is an essential stage in the path of Zen. Unmoored from the ballast of desire\, we dissolve into the clear solution of spirit. We rise and rise until we disappear into the night sky\, lost among the countless twinkling stars. \nBut the journey does not end there. The other half of our life lies in this world\, with its burdens and surprises and beautiful\, fragile bodies. And so we return bearing the fresh memory of our celestial ancestry\, to find the stars now scattered throughout deserts and cities. \nThe great joke in the end is that we’ve always been here\, listening to the stone woman as she calls us home. \nSee you Sunday\, \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI

SUMMARY:SATURDAY ZEN: For PZI Members – Conversations with David Weinstein
DESCRIPTION:About Saturday Conversations \nDokusan is the Japanese word for these conversations about meditation practice. It means “to go alone” or “to practice alone.” It is to have a conversation so intimate\, that for both participants it is as if you were talking with and listening to yourself. \nThe word “conversation” (in place of the Japanese word dokusan) has its own way of speaking to the experience. \nEtymologically\, it means “to turn around together.” Meditation is often referred to as a turning around of our attention towards the inside. These conversations about meditation practice are an opportunity for a mutual turning the light around and exploring what’s there. \n—David Weinstein \n\nSaturday Conversations with David Weinstein Roshi\nOnline on Zoom from 8–10:00 am Pacific Time\nEvery two weeks \nIf you are a PZI Member and would like to have a conversation with David\,\nbook your 15-minute online meeting for July 26th here.\n \nDana gratefully accepted \nQuestions? SUMMARY:TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: What Is the Source of White?
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nYangshan pointed to the statue of a snow lion and asked\,\n“Is there anyone who can go beyond this whiteness?”                                                                                            Yunmen said\, “I’d have immediately knocked it over for him.”\nXuedou said\, “He only explains knocking it over\, he doesn’t explain helping it up.” \n—Book of Serenity Case 26 \nWe met Yangshan in Book of Serenity Case 15\, when he planted his hoe in the ground in response to Guishan’s question about how many people were working in the field. In that koan Yangshan put his hoe over his shoulder and went off to South Mountain to help with the harvest. \nThis reminds me of the comments on the Snow Lion koan from Yunmen and Xuedou. Planting his hoe\, knocking it over\, putting her hoe over her shoulder and going to South Mountain\, helping it up. \nThen there is white—the color of purity\, that single sheet of white silk. Some people try to scrub their mind clean of all thoughts\, believing that is the Way\, eliminating all impurities. But white is not the absence of color\, it is the presence of all colors\, just as the awakened mind is not the absence of thought. \nAnother koan involving Yangshan and his teacher Guishan came to join in the conversation. In that koan Guishan presents Yangshan with the case of someone saying\, “There is only disorderly karmic consciousness and nothing whatsoever to rely on.” We cannot rely on the color white; we must go beyond it. \nTaking a step off a 100-foot pole\, the Hermit of Lotus blossom peak saying\, “It has no power for the Way\,” Zhaozhou’s “I do not abide in clarity\,” and “What is the source of ‘No’?”—these also came along to join in the conversation. \nWhat is the source of white? \n—David Weinstein \n\nDavid Weinstein Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Tuesdays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation.\nRegister to participate. SUMMARY:MONDAY ZEN with Jon Joseph: Why Wait? We Can Have It Right Now
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nOne day\, Huangbo went into the kitchen and asked the cook what he was doing\, and the cook said he was sorting rice for the monks. Huangbo asked how much rice they were eating. \n\nThe cook replied\, “Two-and-a-half measures.”\n“Isn’t that too much?” asked Huangbo.\n“I’m afraid it isn’t enough\,” said the cook.\nHuangbo struck him.\n\nLater\, the cook mentioned this to Linji\, who said\, “I’ll test the old fellow for you.” As soon as Linji came to attend Huangbo\, Huangbo told the story and said that the cook didn’t understand.\n\nLinji asked\, “Isn’t that too much?” And then he said\, “Teacher\, kindly give a turning word in place of the cook.”\n“Well\, why not say\, ‘We’ll eat a meal again tomorrow!’”\nLinji slapped Huangbo and said\, “Why talk about tomorrow—eat it right now!”\n“This lunatic has come here again to pull the tiger’s whiskers\,” said Huangbo.\nLinji shouted and went out.\n\n—The Record of Linji\, Critical Examinations\, I \nWhy wait until tomorrow? Why not have it now? \nUpon entering practice\, it is hard not to set targets and timelines. At least it has been hard for me. Fulfillment\, awakening\, recognition: these goals are hard\, if not impossible\, to resist. “I’m late\, I’m late\, for a very important date!” says Alice’s White Rabbit. I notice in myself a constant urge to trade up for something better. \nWe sometimes forget there is nothing better than this moment\, this place. The good news is we don’t have to wait around for “this.” We can enter the world of awakening right now. But it may not be what we anticipated\, planned for\, or scheduled. It may look a lot like our ordinary life\, but also more mysterious\, more wonderful\, and more beautiful than we imagined. \nIn his introduction to Edward Espe Brown’s The Most Important Point\, editor Danny Parker writes about his big hopes\, and then his great disappointment\, on entering the path. \n“My experience with Zen practice during those months was surprising and largely disappointing—not at all what I imagined. Nothing in my life was solved. My problems loomed larger than when I first came. Far from reaching enlightenment\, I experienced my life as patently mundane. The magic carpet of kensho was pulled out from under me. The great hope of a big transformative realization was gone.”   \nAfter a time\, Danny drifted away from the practice. A decade later\, he was invited by a friend to do a one-day sitting with Ed Brown\, and it became for him “one of the most powerful and pivotal” moments of his life. \n“Old pinecones falling periodically on the metal roof thumped like a cheering section; outdoors jays wailed for me. Even my aching legs seemed to love me. I was home again in quiet simple kindness.”\n\nLinji is the master of the “Don’t Wait” school\, and some of his advice is exceedingly helpful\, in the most simple\, immediate manner: Forget the primi or secondi piatti\, eat your dolce now. \nWe don’t have to believe the stories we cook up. We can be generous hosts and offer welcome. And we can do that right now. \n—Jon Joseph \nArt: A Dahlia from my garden\, with photo assist from Stephen Gay \n\nJon Joseph Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Mondays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends: Chaos! Disorder! Nothing to Rely On!
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nGuishan asked Yangshan\, “Suppose that out of the blue\, someone asks you\, ‘All sentient beings only have karmic consciousness\, boundless and with no foundation to rely on.’ How would you conduct an inquiry into this?”\nYangshan said\, “If a student like that came\, I’d call\, ‘Hey so and so!’\nWhen the student turns his head\, then I say\, ‘What is it?’\nThen I’d wait while she thinks about it.\nThen I’d say\, ‘Not only is karmic consciousness boundless but also there is no foundation to rely on.’”\nGuishan said\, “Good!” \n—Book of Serenity\, Case 37 \nYou\, what do you own the world?\nHow do you own disorder? \n—System of a Down\, Toxicity \n\nOh\, man. My mind the past few days has been a wreck! It gnaws on itself\, chases out after things\, and constantly generates the least helpful theories possible about what’s going on in my life. \nI got sick on the day my parents came to visit\, my 5–year–old kicked me out of my bed for the second night in a row\, and now my cats’ automatic litter box has gone haywire. \nIt feels like someone has taken the carefully arranged Scrabble board of my thoughts and dumped it upside–down. \nSo what’s the remedy\, Doctor? What can you prescribe me? \nChaos! Disorder! Nothing to rely on! \nSee you Sunday 😉 \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: Stop the World!
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nOne day\, Yanguan called to his attendant\, “Bring me the rhinoceros fan.”\nThe attendant said\, “It’s broken.”\nYanguan said\, “If the fan is broken\, bring me the rhinoceros.”\nThe attendant did not answer.\nZifu drew a circle and wrote “rhinoceros” inside it. \nBook of Serenity Case 25\n\nYanguan’s request to have the rhinoceros brought to him stopped the world of his attendant. It’s sort of like being on a playground merry-go-round which suddenly stops\, but the world keeps spinning. I’m reminded of last week’s koan about the turtle-nosed snake and how being bitten by it stops the world. \nImagine someone asking you what your favorite color is and after you tell them\, they say\, “No\, it’s not.” That might stop you or might stop the world—either way. Anything might do it\, be the trigger\, the catalyst; like the sound of a pebble hitting bamboo\, or being told a dog does not have Buddha nature\, or that last step that you forgot was there.  \nOne of my personal favorites is reaching for something that’s not there. It should be there\, it is always there\, I’m sure I put it there\, and in the moment before any thought\, before I start assigning blame\, it’s quiet. \n—David Weinstein \n\nDavid Weinstein Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Tuesdays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation.\nRegister to participate.
\n—David Weinstein \n\nSaturday Conversations with David Weinstein Roshi\nOnline on Zoom from 8–10:00 am Pacific Time\nEvery two weeks \nIf you are a PZI Member and would like to have a conversation with David\,\nbook your 15-minute online meeting for July 12th here:\n \nhttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0848A9AD2CA7F4C25-57353693-saturday \nDana gratefully accepted \nQuestions? SUMMARY:TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: Xuefeng's Turtle-Nosed Snake
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nXuefeng said to the gathering\, “There is a turtle nosed snake on South Mountain.\nAll of you should take a good look.”\nChangqing said\, “There are definitely people in this hall today in danger of losing their lives.”\nYunmen threw his staff in front of Xuefeng and acted as if he were frightened.\nA student told Xuansha about this. Xuansha said\, “Of course\, my brother Changqing sees it like that.\nBut even if he’s right\, I wouldn’t say it that way.”\n“What point would you make?” asked the student.\n“Why bring South Mountain into it?” responded Xuansha. \nPart of another Book of Serenity koan came along as I kept company with this koan about Xuefeng’s turtle-nosed snake.  \nThat koan is Case fifty-six: \nA student asked Qinglin\, “When a student goes along the path\, what about that?”\nQinglin said\, “There’s a poisonous snake on the path.\nI advise the student not to run into it.”\n“What about when the student runs into it?”\n“She must mourn her life.”\n“What about when she doesn’t run into it?”\n“There is no way to avoid it.” \nQinglin advises students to not run into the poisonous snake on the path\, and then says that there is no way to avoid it\, that there’s a koan there for you. Xuefeng advises that we take a good look. I’m thinking that Qinglin’s snake and Xuefeng’s snake are the same snake.  \nIn either case\, we lose our life. Also\, what came along was what is traditionally recited at the end of each evening of a retreat\,  \nLife and death are grave matters\, all things pass quickly away\, always be completely alert\, never neglectful\, never indulgent.  \nWhile awareness of our mortality can focus the mind\, I don’t think that’s what either Xuefeng or Qinglin are talking about. \nThen there is Xuansha’s comment\, “Why bring South Mountain into it?” In my conversations with several people who participated in our last retreat\, they report continuing to feel carried by the retreat since it’s completion nearly two weeks ago.  \nWhy bring the retreat into it?  \nDo you have a ‘South Mountain’? \n—David Weinstein \n\nDavid Weinstein Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Tuesdays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation.\nRegister to participate. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends: One Strip of White Silk
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nOne strip of white silk. \nIt’s an ancient image in Chan\, the whole universe as one strip of white silk. And it is currently on display everywhere: the morning breeze sweeps eucalyptus leaves across the pavement; someone down the street is shouting and I feel disturbed; the Laguna Canyon stretches down to the sea before me. \nShitou said\, \nWe and everything we perceive\nare interwoven and not interwoven\,\nand this interweaving continues on and on\,\nwhile each thing stands in its own place. \nThis is not something to believe but a possibility to open ourselves to. As the mind settles\, our sensing sinks down and in\, like raindrops penetrating the soil. The entire bright universe bursts into being\, a flower simultaneously in full bloom and always unfolding. \nLooking forward to sitting with you on Sunday! \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal.

SUMMARY:TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: Waiting for the Year of the Donkey
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nWhenever Luzu saw a student coming\, he immediately faced the wall.\nHearing about this\, Nanquan said\, “I usually say to others\, ‘Make what was before the empty eon your own. Grasp the time when the Buddha had not yet come into the world.’ Still\, I can’t get a whole or even a half a person enlightened. If he goes on like that\, he’ll have to wait for the Year of the Donkey.” \n(There is no ‘Year of the Donkey’ in the Chinese calendar)\n\n —Book of Serenity Case 23 \nWhat stands out for me is Nanquan’s “Still\, I can’t get a whole or even a half a person enlightened.” \nNo one can ‘get’ someone enlightened; it is the recognition of something that has already happened\, not a creation of something. We are enlightened from the very beginning. It is a matter of recognizing that\, not making it happen. \nIn that way\, Nanquan and Luzu are saying the same thing. And in a way\, Luzu is making a perfect presentation of what Nanquan is talking about. \nWe don’t face the wall anymore; we face a wall of other faces and discover that they are all ours. \n—David Weinstein \n\nDavid Weinstein Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Tuesdays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation.\nRegister to participate. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with Guest Host Tess Beasley & Friends: Fate\, Destiny\, Karma & Coincidence
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nPatterns\, rhymes\, callings\, and coincidences all seem to mark and steer our lives\, often as if by an unseen hand\, gently or firmly guiding us along. \nSometimes such forces can feel like magic\, other times like a curse\, but either way they open us to the inconceivable and inexplicable—both of great interest in Zen. \nIn meditation\, we become more tuned to the larger currents flowing through\, and less preoccupied with our own plans and schemes. We begin to trust the fabric of things as they are\, and over and over again discover we’re in just the right place. \nJoin us Sunday for stories\, meditation\, music\, and deep companionship. \n—Tess Beasley \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:TUESDAY ZEN with David Weinstein: Yantou’s Shout and Bow – Equanimity 22
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nYantou came to Deshan’s place. With a foot on each side of the threshold\, he asked\, “Is this ordinary? Is this holy?”\nDeshan roared.\nYantou bowed.\nHearing about this\, Dongshan said\, “No one but clear sighted Yantou would have understood that.”\nYantou said\, “That good old boy Dongshan can’t tell good from bad. At that moment\, I raised up with one hand and pressed down with the other.” \nAs I have been keeping company with this koan\, what has arisen is remembering how many times in reading Yamada Roshi’s commentaries\, he takes a jab at his teacher\, Yasutani. Sometimes the jabs go all the way back to Yasutani’s teacher Harada. He is always respectful\, raising up one hand\, but also jabs\, as he presses down with the other hand. \nThere is no bottom to the well that this practice offers us. So not so surprising that a student would surpass their teacher as they press on\, down into the matter of\, “What is this?” It could be said that it is the responsibility of both the teacher and student to make that so. \n—David Weinstein \n\nDavid Weinstein Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Tuesdays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation.\nRegister to participate. SUMMARY:MONDAY ZEN with Jon Joseph – The Tao Arrived: A sharing of experiences from the Great Summer Retreat
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nZhaozhou taught\, “The Greatest Way is not difficult if you just don’t pick and choose. As soon as you hear this\, you think\, ‘That’s picking and choosing\,’ or ‘That’s clarity.’ But I don’t identify with clarity. Can you live this way?”\nA student asked\, “If you don’t identify with clarity\, what do you live by?” “Again\, I don’t know\,” responded Zhou.\n“If you don’t know\, why do you say that you don’t identify with clarity?” “Just asking the question is enough\,” replied Zhou. “Make your bow and step back.” \n—The Blue Cliff Record\, Case 2 \nAs I write\, we are finishing up Pacific Zen’s Great Summer Sesshin in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Morning fog rolls up from the Pajaro Valley\, sometimes engulfing our zendo\, but each day around noon the fog burns off and the bright sunshine comes out\, filtering through the coastal redwoods. Over the week our meditations have followed a similar natural rhythm of mist turning to clear sunshine. \n“We are all like fledgling birds\,” one teacher said\, “Each time we come to retreat\, we grow a few more feathers until finally we can fly.” \nDaily\, whole koans or their bits have been flying gracefully across the empty sky in which we sit. A few that appeared this week: \nThe physical body decays. What is the pure and everlasting body? Mountain flowers open like brocade; mountain torrents are deep as indigo. \nOur Mind is nothing other than mountains\, rivers and great earth\, the sun\, moon and stars. \nI spent some time with Zhaozhou’s “Greatest Way” (above)\, one of the most important koans in The Blue Cliff Record. In that koan\, the character Way\, or Tao 道(J. dō)\, is a foundational notion in Chan–Zen. But the character often translated great\, 至 (J. shi)\, in common usage means to arrive\, reach\, attain. So one possible translation of the above term is “The Way Arrived\,” or “The Way that is attained.” \nIf the life we already have is both arrived and attained\, whole and complete in itself\, then this life with all its many avenues and ditches is the greatest way. If somehow we learn to identify less with either endarkenment (picking and choosing) or enlightenment (clarity)\, then perhaps we can walk this greatest way\, this vast empty sky\, with just a bit more ease. As traveling companions\, this pure and everlasting body will always be with us. It forever lives in the valley fog and coastal redwoods. \n—Jon Joseph \n\nJon Joseph Roshi\n  \nCOME JOIN US on Mondays for koan meditation\, dharma talk and conversation. Register to participate. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: ON BREAK
DESCRIPTION:John Tarrant is on break today for sesshin. Join us again on June 29th!\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal.
