DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION CLOSED \nAlready registered and have questions? \nContact registrar Lora Ferguson at loraferg1328@gmail.com \n\nGreat Summer Sesshin \nIn Person with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers \nThe Summer of Zen: Meeting the Inconceivable\nSanta Sabina Retreat Center\nin Northern California\nJune 10th–16th\, 2023 \nAh\, the Summer of Zen!\nAh\, the moon and the stars! \nHere is our koan: \nOne day\, Yanguan called to his attendant\, “Bring me the rhinoceros fan.”\nThe attendant replied\, “The fan is broken.”\nYanguan said\, “If the fan is broken\, bring back the rhinoceros.” \nAnd how am I going to navigate this life of wonder and tears? Meditation opens space. \nThe birds of the morning\, the traffic sounds\, they are all a great cry and we can’t help but respond.\n“Here I am! I’m in summer retreat and all is well.” \nThe mind settles\, the heart opens by itself\, and a solitary brightness is visible in every single thing. Even your shoes and your knees are delighted. The kitchen is thrilled\, it wants to follow you into the meditation hall. Everywhere\, deep gratitude wells up. Silently\, in the quiet afternoon of retreat—unsought happiness. \nJoin us for our yearly summer sesshin\, a time to sit together in silence in the companionship of wonder. \nThis is our last summer sesshin in Santa Sabina\, a beautiful retreat center where the nuns have been very kind to us over many years. \nSummer Sesshin is our major gathering for the year. We meet and sit together. There will be refuge ceremonies and sutras and teachings and also deep and marvelous silence. \nJoin us\, join us! \n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\nOur Summer Sesshin: \nThere will be personal interviews and deep meditation\, teaching talks and some conversations\, old friends and new\, brilliant teachers\, music\, great enlightenment\, mistakes\, and delight. \nThis is an extended 7-day & 6-night in-person gathering beginning Monday June 10th at 7:30 pm\, and completing Sunday June 16th at 12:00 pm. \nWith PZI Teachers: John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, Tess Beasley\, Jon Joseph\, Michelle Riddle\, David Weinstein\nHead of Practice: Todd Geist\n \n\n\n\n \nWhere: Santa Sabina Retreat Center in Northern California: \nSanta Sabina Center\n25 Magnolia Ave\nSan Rafael\, CA 94901 \n\n\nRetreat registration includes room and board free access to PZI Summer Open Temple morning meditations. \nPZI Member Single\, 2100\nPZI Member Double\, 1545 \nNon-member Single\, 2200\nNon-member Double\, 1595 \nFor retreat questions or request a PZI Member scholarship\, contact our registrar\,\nLora Ferguson at loraferg1328@gmail.com \n\nDear PZI Friends\, \nIn sesshin we come together with PZI members\, teachers\, musicians\, and those new to PZI. SUMMARY:OPEN MIND RETREAT: Transforming the Mind & Heart – The Story of the Grail with John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:CLOSED \nContact Registrar Eleanor Silberman if you have questions. \n\nTransforming the Mind & Heart\n—The Story of the Grail\nWith John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley \nMarch 7–10\, 2024\nThursday Eve through Sunday Noon\nCommonweal Center\, Bolinas CA \nIN PERSON \nPeople go to abandoned places to search for their true nature. \nAt such a moment\, Honored One\, where is your true nature? \nIn the old days there was a wasteland and in that wild expanse there was a castle that appeared and disappeared at will. The king of that castle was disabled with an ancient wound and unable to walk but he could fish from a boat and was called the Fisher King. \nHis sickness caused the land around to be infertile. You could not find his palace but you might stumble upon it. The palace had a magical sword and a grail dish that emits light and heals but did not heal the king.  \nThat is your job when you arrive there: to understand\, to heal the Grail King and the land around\, and to learn to ask a question which requires not heroics but intimacy and tender care. In your turn you will have to take up his duties and rule the castle. \nThe Grail Story appeared when the old order was breaking down\, and we live in that sort of time now and we think it will help us. It is a koan story in which impossible problems must be solved. \n \n—John Tarrant \n\n\nJoin us for an exploration of the great way of Zen—koans\, stories\, meditation and dreams. We’re looking forward to it\, and there are limited numbers\, so if you want to come\, sign up soon. Join us at Beautiful Bolinas. \n—John\, Allison\, & Tess \n  \n\nWhat Is An Open Mind Retreat? \nJohn Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, and Tess Beasley will lead this retreat with a group of twenty-five participants or fewer. There is usually a mix of experienced meditators and complete beginners. We sit in a circle and meditate until it’s time to listen or talk\, until it’s time to take a walk and gaze at the ocean\, put our faces into the wind and feel our hearts shift in new and unexpected ways. \nPacific Zen Institute’s Open Mind retreats come out of our impulse to make a Zen meditation retreat that is native to American culture. When we take away the barriers to understanding\, things just naturally shine. \nThis is a residential retreat held in a beautiful place on the ocean with a simple feel\, and wonderful food. \nPeople find that this retreat has a powerful effect on their lives and understanding of the practice of the inner life and the world of work and personal interaction. It has the deep strength of an intensive meditation retreat inside a form that works for people with different levels of meditation experience. It has a flexible schedule that works well for those who would like to bring a partner or a friend. \nNo particular background in spiritual practice is required. \nBring a notebook. Also\, if you want to paint or draw or play an instrument you can bring your gear. \n\nRETREAT DETAILS \nCost\nMember Shared Room (double): $825\nMember Single Room: $1025 \nNon-Member Shared Room (double): $875\nNon-Member Single Room: $1075 \nLocation:\nCommonweal Center\, 451 Mesa Rd\, Bolinas\, CA 94924 \nDates and Times:\nFour Days & Three Nights\nBegins Thursday\, March 7th\, at 7:00 p.m. (dinner at 6\, check-in at 5)\nEnds Sunday\, March 10th at 12:00 p.m. \nQuestions:\nMember scholarship and retreat-related questions?\nContact Eleanor Silberman \n\nIn Bolinas\, the grey whales are migrating north with the calves close in\, pelicans fly by like royalty\, osprey carry fish and hermit thrushes pass through. Foxes are stealing shoes\, small badgers are peeping out of holes\, the ocean is breaking on Duxbury reef\, and the great forces carry us too\, as we had hoped. \nIn the field of meditation we welcome a spring that is larger than our difficulties or fears. There is a joy and renewal. We don’t have to get back into life. We are there already.  —John Tarrant \n\nJohn Tarrant Roshi taught Zen in a traditional Japanese manner for about 15 years and then developed new ways to teach people who had no previous experience of Zen koans or even of meditation. \nJohn has a Ph.D. in psychology and is the author of Bring Me The Rhinoceros & Other Zen Koans That Will Save Your Life\, and The Light Inside the Dark: Zen\, Soul\, & the Spiritual Life. He directs Pacific Zen Institute. He has a special interest in leadership and in creativity.

SUMMARY:CLOSED: 2023 ONLINE Fall Retreat with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers – The Storehouse of Treasures Opens by Itself
DESCRIPTION:CLOSED \n\n\nFall Online Retreat\nThe Storehouse of Treasures Opens by Itself\nLive Online with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers\n\nPZI Digital Temple\nSeptember 27–30\, 2023\n16 (or 100) bodhisattvas \nIn the old days there were sixteen bodhisattvas\nThey all got into the bath together and realized the cause of water.\nThey called out\, “This subtle touch reveals the light that is in everything.\nWe have reached the place where the sons and daughters\nof the Buddha live.” \n—The Blue Cliff Record Case 78 \nUnhappiness is all about being separate\, constructing ourselves as a separate device in the universe. \nA bath\, though\, cleanses us and dissolves pain; it is the most part of tears\, ocean\, and of our own cells. All the time\, beneath our ideas and troubles\, we are being carried along by a great current. Don’t forget to wash behind your ears\, as my mother said. \nWhat a great thing it is to step into the temple\, to step into the place before there was sorrow or loss. In the end\, everything comes down to the fabulous\, extensive now that we are in. \nThere is no one to be worried\, no one to be anxious\, no flaw to find. The trouble that chases us can’t find us. \nWhen we enter the temple together\, there is a mysterious field effect. We are companions on the road and walking the road\, we are lighter\, funnier. And at peace. \n—John Tarrant \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nOnline Fall Retreat: \nThere will be personal interviews and deep meditation\, teaching talks and some conversations\, old friends and new\, brilliant teachers\, music\, great enlightenment\, mistakes\, and delight. \nWith PZI Teachers John Tarrant\, Tess Beasley\, Jesse Cardin\, Eduardo Fuentes\,\nJon Joseph\, David Parks\, and David Weinstein \nRegistrar: Marion Yakoushkin \nHOP: Jan Brogan \n  \nThis is a 4-day and 3-night online gathering beginning at 4:30 pm Pacific Time\non Wednesday\, September 27th\, and completing Saturday\, September 30th at noon. \nWhere: In the PZI Digital Temple \nFees: PZI Members: $395 & Non-Members: $450 \nPZI Members: If you want to attend and are in need\, please don’t hesitate to request financial aid through a PZI Scholarship. SUMMARY:CLOSED: Great Summer Sesshin with John Tarrant & Friends - Creatures of the Summer Dawn
DESCRIPTION:Creatures of the Summer Dawn \n\nGreat Summer Sesshin\nIn Person with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers \n\nSanta Sabina Retreat Center\nin Northern California\nJune 12–18\, 2023 \nFox and buffalo\, dogs and flesh eating demons\, ghosts\, people divided into two beings\, tigers who befriend Chan masters\, dragons\, learned tea ladies—all appear in our koan stories. Also there are refugees\, exiles\, widows\, people having secret love affairs\, all creatures of the summer dawn\, each having their place in the totality of things. And their beauty too. \nIt’s good to spend time with people who aren’t people\, and people who are. \nIn the Zen tradition\, animals and demons and ghosts all have buddha nature and there are koans about their journeys\, which are like ours. I had a dog who came out at night to sit with me\, leaning against my body as we sat. I have had other wild creatures\, such as echidnas\, birds\, and snakes approach me while sitting. \nWhen I went to visit a friend in Mendocino\, a raven swooped low to greet us. I nodded and we went in. Great horned owls and red-tailed hawks occupy the trees around our temple home and note\, and sometimes comment on\, our comings and goings. \nAll these creatures are present in our waking consciousness\, but also they move around and call for us in our dreams and sleep. They occupy a place in the deeps where we enter the koan lands. \nJoin us for an exploration of our own true nature. \n—John Tarrant \n\n\nOur Summer Sesshin: \nThere will be personal interviews and deep meditation\, teaching talks and some conversations\, old friends and new\, brilliant teachers\, music\, great enlightenment\, mistakes\, and delight. \nThis is an extended 7-day & 6-night in-person gathering beginning Monday June 12th at 4:30 pm\, and completing Sunday June 18th at 12:00 pm. \n\n—with PZI Teachers: John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, Tess Beasley\, Jon Joseph\n& David Weinstein \n \n—with HOP Michelle Riddle & Registrar Marion Yakoushkin \n\n\n\n \nWhere: Santa Sabina Retreat Center in Northern California: \nSanta Sabina Center\n25 Magnolia Ave\nSan Rafael\, CA 94901 \n\nRetreat registration includes free access to PZI Summer Open Temple morning meditations. \n\n\nDear PZI Friends\, \nIn sesshin we come together with PZI members\, teachers\, musicians\, and those new to PZI. We can discover things which we could not discover alone. It’s nice to have each other as we find our way. Thank you for all you offer to PZI. \n—PZI Board President Tess Beasley Sensei & Director John Tarrant Roshi\, & All of us at PZI \n\n

SUMMARY:OPEN MIND RETREAT: CLOSED – The Fleeting Kiss of Beautiful Things with John Tarrant & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nThe Fleeting Kiss of Beautiful Things\nwith John Tarrant & Tess Beasley\nMarch 16–19\, 2023\nThursday Eve through Sunday Noon\nCommonweal Center\, Bolinas CA\nIN PERSON \nSpring returns with green shoots\, gestures\, embraces\, optimism\, plans\, and most of all\, desire. These simple things make us human. There is beauty in incompleteness and imperfection and the not-yet-achieved—inside the longing of becoming. We strive to understand our lives and often disapprove of ourselves\, thinking that will help. Spring arrives with its blossoms and rain. It has few opinions. \nDreams also appear without our efforts or interference\, the Dao moves and carries us\, love does too. Inside our own skin\, spring steps forward before thought\, before words\, before knowing. \nJoin us for an exploration of the great way of Zen—koans\, stories\, meditation and dreams. We’re looking forward to it\, and there are limited numbers\, so sign up early.\n \n—John Tarrant \n\nJohn Tarrant Roshi taught Zen in a traditional Japanese manner for about 15 years and then developed new ways to teach people who had no previous experience of Zen koans or even of meditation. \nTess Beasley Sensei is a koan Zen teacher based in New York\, and also serves as Pacific Zen Institute’s Board President. \nShe is currently completing her Ph.D. in Jungian and Archetypal Psychology and is particularly interested in the ways Zen and depth psychology complement each other to kindle creativity and transformation. \n\nAbout PZI Open Mind Retreats \nPacific Zen Institute’s Open Mind retreats come out of our impulse to make a Zen meditation retreat that is native to American culture. When we take away the barriers to understanding\, things just naturally shine. \nThis is a residential retreat held in a beautiful place on the ocean with a simple feel\, and wonderful food. \nThere will be sitting together\, koans\, teaching\, walking on the beach\, poetry\, conversation\, writing and time to find out what our lives might be like without our usual stories. We will do exercises that help our attention to deepen. We will make discoveries and our lives will open. \nThis is a retreat that people find has a powerful effect on their lives and their understanding\, both of the practice of the inner life and of the world of work and personal interaction. It has the deep strength of an intensive meditation retreat inside a form that works for people with all different levels of meditation experience. It has a flexible schedule that makes it work well for those who would like to bring a partner or a friend. \nNo particular background in spiritual practice is required. \nBring a notebook. Also\, if you want to paint or draw or play an instrument you can bring your gear. \n\nCost:\nMembers Shared Room (double): $825\nNon-members Shared Room (double): $875 \nMembers Single Room: $1025\nNon-members Single Room: $1075 \nLocation:\nCommonweal Center\, 451 Mesa Rd\, Bolinas\, CA 94924 \nDates and Times:\nBegins Thursday\, March 16th\, at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific Time)\nEnds Sunday\, March 19th at 12:00 p.m. \nOur registrar is Eleanor Silberman at eleanor@pacificzen.com \n\nIn Bolinas\, the grey whales are migrating north with the calves close in\, pelicans fly by like royalty\, osprey carry fish and hermit thrushes pass through. —John Tarrant
