SUMMARY:OPEN MIND RETREAT: There and Back Again – Pilgrimage of the Inner Life with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers
DESCRIPTION:This event is currently at capacity.\nEmail registrar Eleanor to be put on the the waiting list: eleanor@pacificzen.org\n\nThere and Back Again: Pilgrimage of the Inner Life\nSummer Open Mind Retreat\nwith John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, & Tess Beasley \nAugust 7–10\, 2025\nThursday Eve through Sunday Noon\nCommonweal Center\, Bolinas CA \nIN PERSON\n \n\nOut and back… \nWe are so often on a journey\, keeping company with each other. \nIn the beginning of practice\, mountains are mountains\, and rivers are rivers. \nAfter we have been practicing for some time\, some years\, we notice that mountains are no longer mountains and rivers are no longer rivers. \nAs practice continues\, however\, we go deeper into the mountains\, following the thrush’s song\, and we too become deeply thus\, and we find that mountains are again mountains and rivers are rivers once more. \nIt is the great journey assisted by dreams\, meditations\, courage and trust. \nIt gives the shape to our lives. The ancestors keep us company. \nBecoming aware of the journey\, realizing that we are on a great journey\, yes that helps a lot. \n—John Tarrant \n \n\nJoin us for an exploration of the great way of Zen—koans\, stories\, meditation and dreams. We’re looking forward to it\, and there are limited numbers\, so if you want to come\, sign up soon. \n\nWhat Is An Open Mind Retreat? \nJohn Tarrant and PZI Teachers will lead this retreat with a group of twenty-five participants or fewer. There is usually a mix of experienced meditators and complete beginners. We sit in a circle and meditate until it’s time to listen or talk\, until it’s time to take a walk and gaze at the ocean\, put our faces into the wind and feel our hearts shift in new and unexpected ways. \nPacific Zen Institute’s Open Mind retreats come out of our impulse to make a Zen meditation retreat that is native to American culture. When we take away the barriers to understanding\, things just naturally shine. \nThis is a residential retreat held in a beautiful place on the ocean with a simple feel\, and wonderful food. \nPeople find that this retreat has a powerful effect on their lives and understanding of the practice of the inner life and the world of work and personal interaction. \nIt has the deep strength of an intensive meditation retreat inside a form that works for people with different levels of meditation experience. It has a flexible schedule that works well for those who would like to bring a partner or a friend. \nNo particular background in spiritual practice is required. \nBring a notebook. Also\, if you want to paint or draw or play an instrument you can bring your gear. \n\nRETREAT DETAILS \nCost\nMember Shared Room (double): 895\nMember Single Room: 1125 AT CAPACITY \nNon-Member Shared Room (double): 945\nNon-Member Single Room: 1175 AT CAPACITY \nLocation:\nCommonweal Center\, 451 Mesa Rd\, Bolinas\, CA 94924 \nDates and Times:\nFour Days & Three Nights\nBegins Thursday\, August 7th\, at 7:00 p.m. (dinner at 6\, check-in at 4)\nEnds Sunday\, August 10th at 12:00 p.m. \nRegistrar:\nFor retreat\, registration\, and PZI Member Scholarship questions\,\nContact Eleanor Silberman at eleanor@pacificzen.org \n\nIn Bolinas\, the grey whales are migrating north with the calves close in\, pelicans fly by like royalty\, osprey carry fish and hermit thrushes pass through. Foxes are stealing shoes\, small badgers are peeping out of holes\, the ocean is breaking on Duxbury reef\, and the great forces carry us too\, as we had hoped. \nIn the field of meditation we welcome a spring that is larger than our difficulties or fears. There is a joy and renewal. We don’t have to get back into life. We are there already.  —John Tarrant \n\nJohn Tarrant Roshi taught Zen in a traditional Japanese manner for about 15 years and then developed new ways to teach people who had no previous experience of Zen koans or even of meditation. \nJohn has a Ph.D. in psychology and is the author of Bring Me The Rhinoceros & Other Zen Koans That Will Save Your Life\, and The Light Inside the Dark: Zen\, Soul\, & the Spiritual Life. He directs Pacific Zen Institute. SUMMARY:GREAT FALL SESSHIN with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers: The Manifestations of the 1000-Armed Goddess of Mercy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS CLOSED \n\n\nGreat Fall Sesshin\nIn Person with John Tarrant & PZI Teachers \nThe Manifestations of the1000-Armed Goddess of Mercy\n\nSanta Sabina Retreat Center\nin Northern California\nOctober 22–27\, 2024\n \n  \n  \n  \n \nWhen we are asleep we sink down into the dream world where we are not ourselves and we are all connected. When we wake\, we might rise up forgetting to worry or be separate. First we just look at things without prejudice\, without deciding what they are beforehand. The things of the world come to us. \nThen you might notice the palm of your own hand\, a leaf\, a child turning her head slowly toward you\, a lizard taking in the sun\, the daylight moon above the roof\, the sounds of crickets making music\, traffic sounds\, the bike with loud pipes. And when you let each thing be as it is\, you might see in each thing the face of the thousand-armed goddess of mercy. That is the touch of the heart of the goddess. \nJoin us for our Great Fall Sesshin. This is a retreat about welcome and mercy and clarity\, how we are still connected as if we were asleep and full of love whether or not we know it yet. There will be personal interviews and deep meditation\, teaching talks and some conversations\, old friends and new\, brilliant teachers\, music\, great enlightenment\, mistakes\, and delight. \nFriends\, this will be our last sesshin at Santa Sabina—last time to sit in the arched\, silent cloister\, to see great trellises of roses and the hummingbirds dashing through the fountain. The sisters and the place have been good to us. We’d love to have you this final time. \n—John Tarrant \n\n\nThis is a 6-day and 5-night in-person gathering beginning Tuesday\, October 22nd at 7:30 pm\,\nand completing Sunday\, October 27th at 12:00 pm. \n\n\nWith PZI Teachers: John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, Tess Beasley\, Jon Joseph\, David Weinstein\nHead of Practice: Todd Geist\nTimekeeper: Marion Power\n \n\n\n\n \nWhere: Santa Sabina Retreat Center in Northern California: \nSanta Sabina Center\n25 Magnolia Ave\nSan Rafael\, CA 94901 \n\n\nRetreat registration includes room and board and free access to PZI Fall Open Temple morning meditations. \nPZI Member Single\, 1750\nPZI Member Double\, 1300 \nNon-member Single\, 1800\nNon-member Double\, 1350 \nFor retreat questions contact our registrar. \n\nDear PZI Friends — We come together across oceans and continents with our members\, teachers\, musicians\, and those new to PZI. The kitchen is thrilled\, it wants to follow you into the meditation hall. Everywhere\, deep gratitude wells up. Silently\, in the quiet afternoon of retreat—unsought happiness. \nJoin us for our yearly summer sesshin\, a time to sit together in silence in the companionship of wonder. \nThis is our last summer sesshin in Santa Sabina\, a beautiful retreat center where the nuns have been very kind to us over many years. \nSummer Sesshin is our major gathering for the year. SUMMARY:OPEN MIND RETREAT: Transforming the Mind & Heart – The Story of the Grail with John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:CLOSED \nContact Registrar Eleanor Silberman if you have questions. \n\nTransforming the Mind & Heart\n—The Story of the Grail\nWith John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley \nMarch 7–10\, 2024\nThursday Eve through Sunday Noon\nCommonweal Center\, Bolinas CA \nIN PERSON \nPeople go to abandoned places to search for their true nature. \nAt such a moment\, Honored One\, where is your true nature? \nIn the old days there was a wasteland and in that wild expanse there was a castle that appeared and disappeared at will. The king of that castle was disabled with an ancient wound and unable to walk but he could fish from a boat and was called the Fisher King. \nHis sickness caused the land around to be infertile. You could not find his palace but you might stumble upon it. The palace had a magical sword and a grail dish that emits light and heals but did not heal the king.  \nThat is your job when you arrive there: to understand\, to heal the Grail King and the land around\, and to learn to ask a question which requires not heroics but intimacy and tender care. In your turn you will have to take up his duties and rule the castle. \nThe Grail Story appeared when the old order was breaking down\, and we live in that sort of time now and we think it will help us. It is a koan story in which impossible problems must be solved. \n \n—John Tarrant \n\n\nJoin us for an exploration of the great way of Zen—koans\, stories\, meditation and dreams. We’re looking forward to it\, and there are limited numbers\, so if you want to come\, sign up soon. Join us at Beautiful Bolinas. \n—John\, Allison\, & Tess \n  \n\nWhat Is An Open Mind Retreat? \nJohn Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, and Tess Beasley will lead this retreat with a group of twenty-five participants or fewer.
