SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: We've Never Lacked for Salt & Sauce with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nAfter Mazu received the Dharma\, he went far away to Jiangxi to spread the teachings. One day\, his teacher said\, “Mazu is in Jiangxi teaching the Dharma\, but there’s been no word from him.” \nHe said to one of his attendants\, “Go to Mazu’s place\, wait until he gives a lecture\, then ask\, ‘How is it?’ Remember what he says\, then come and tell me.” \nThe monk did as instructed\, waiting for a lecture and then asking Mazu\,“How is it?” \nMazu replied\, “Since the turmoil of the barbarian invasions\, it’s been it’s been thirty years of temporary getting by\, but I’ve never lacked for salt or sauce.”  \n—Great Ancestor Horse (Master Ma): Mazu’s Salt and Sauce \n\n \n  \n  \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n*The Firefox browser may not allow you to access PZI registration buttons. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nSickness & Medicine Correspond with Each Other \nYunmen said to the assembly\, \n“Sickness and medicine correspond with each other.\nThe whole earth is medicine. What am I?” \n—Blue Cliff Record Case 87 \nSickness and medicine relate to listening—listening very intently and deeply to the song\, the voices of the moment we are in. Listening in a pure way without trying to fight the current that carries us. \n\nJoin us for an exploration of the deepest listening. \n  \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Everywhere\, It's Everywhere You Look - with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nJoin us on Sunday for mysterious wanderings in  the Dao. \nMaster Eastwall (Tung-kuo) asked Zhuangzi\, “This thing called the Dao—where does it exist?” \nZhuangzi said\, “There’s no place it doesn’t exist.” \n“Come\,” said Master Eastwall\, “you must be more specific!” \n“It is in the ants and crickets.” \n“As low as that?” \n“It is in the panic grass.” \n“But that’s lower still!” \n“It is in the tiles and shards.” \n“How can it be so extreme?” \n“It is in the piss and shit!” \nMaster Eastwall made no reply. \nZhuangzi said\, “We wander in borderless vastness; Great Knowledge enters in\, and we don’t know where it will ever end.” \n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: In Front of the Dead Tree Cliff\, Flowers Are Always in Bloom with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nGifts:\nIn front of the dead tree cliff\, flowers are always in bloom.\nOutside the screen of luminous jewels\,\nwind and moon are like day.\n\n—Book of Serenity Case 35 \nThe gift of this life is to enter life to choose wholeness rather than purity. Through meditation we find out and acknowledge and express what kind of person we are. \nMany things make no sense\, but we can take them as gifts. Since gifts are not part of the trading world that sustains us and makes sense\, they refer to the ultimate things\, the moonlight that touches everything. Flowers are always in bloom there.\n\nJoin us for the gift of meditation and exploration. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Loving the World That Carries Us All\, Part 2 with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nThe sparrow launches\nfrom a pear branch\, and a yellow\nleaf sets off too\non its own\, different journey. \nThe world carries us from the moment we are born. \nWhen I feel our time\, it seems to be an aurochs\, huge and stubborn and horned\, and my face is up against its rough\, hairy hide\, and its roaring is in my ears. There is plenty of hatred and violence in our times\, and still\, these are the conditions we have been given. Loving our lives seems easily the best attitude to the dilemma of living. \nIn this way we make of ourselves a raft or ferryboat for others. \nThere is a spiritual quality to autumn that is interleaved with the gold and blue\, the loneliness\, the loss of summer\, and the piling up of years. And in this condition\, which we all have\, autumn is golden; the journey we are on can be golden too. \nAppreciating each other is something I like best when it just happens. It is not a virtue but an impartial force. Even if I don’t like someone\, secretly underneath I might notice that I’m amused—secretly I wish them the power to live. \nAnd then an ear worm appears: I’m going around singing Violeta Para’s Gracias a la Vida\, and as I begin to wonder about this\, I notice Louis Armstrong’s voice saying\, “How do you do\, they’re really saying\, ‘I love you!’” \nThanks is yellow and golden this year. \nPerhaps I’ll see you on Sunday. And thank you. \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Transformation of All Things in Moonlight with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nA student asked Baling\, “What is the blown-hair sword?”\nBaling said\, “Each branch of coral holds up the light of the moon.” —BCR Case 100 \nYuanwu says of this phrase\, \nThis is before light and after annihilation\, occupying the heartland alone\, without any equal. \nMoonlight is mysterious\, a realm in which transformation occurs\, and has always been a symbol for those interested in the nature of mind. And coral is an image of totality: each polyp\, each hummingbird\, each mouse\, and each falling leaf shares our nature. \nSo\, moonlight is both uncanny and also it keeps things serene and outside of the world of consequences. Many temples have the feel of moonlit peace and quiet extending in many directions. \nJoin us this Sunday morning for a taste of moonlight. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Hearing the Sounds of the World with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nHearing the sounds is what the name of the deity of compassion means: Guanshiyin. It’s literal. She hears the sounds of the world. We hear the sounds without resistance. And that hearing is itself compassion. \nAn old Zen poem goes\, \nYou see with your ears and hear with your eyes. \nOur whole being is involved. And our minds are at peace. \nWe don’t need to turn away from the world and we don’t have to find a place to stand. Our listening and our presence operate below the level at which we usually manage things. So that is the hearing aspect of this koan. Just let hearing have you. This koan can be carried everywhere with you. \nSo much of meditation starts out as a way to manage or quiet the world\, but the world goes its own way anyway. What we can do is bless what is happening. We do that by hearing without any agenda\, and all is at peace. \nThat’s also the thing to do when we are in difficulties. We accompany each other. Freedom through hearing. \nSee you Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Koans That Give You Vertigo - Stop the Sound of the Temple Bell: with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nMysterious Tasks & Impossible Problems \nWhen autumn begins\, some things dissolve\, and space appears even inside predicaments. September rhymes with memory\, piled up gold and blue distances appear together\, sometimes the spiritual life helps you out of difficulties. You can become one with the flow of events.  \nStop the sound of the distant temple bell. \nThat bell has been ringing since before the beginning of the stars\, outside of all our calculations and measurements\, and perhaps we see that we are all interconnected and interwoven. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Great Kalpa Fire - Predicament Koan 3 with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nJohn Tarrant takes up a series of predicament koans on Sundays for a few weeks.\nMeaning a small path into the Dao\, a class on predicaments. \nPredicament koans match the perilous and lunatic quality of life when everything is changing. When you reach the place where you are defeated\, a gate opens. That is a predicament. All koans might stop you— predicaments are stories about what the obstacle itself is like. \nHere is a story (and koan) about the state of the world: \nA student asked Dasui\, “It’s clear that the fire at the end of the kalpa will completely destroy the universe.\nI’m still not clear whether there’s something  that won’t be destroyed.\nDasui said\, “It will be destroyed.”\n“It will go along with everything else?”\n“It will go along with everything else\,” said Dasui. \nThe old idea is that\, eventually\, the universe ends in flames\, something that we have to take into account and respond to. In Australia\, during the great fires that swept into the ancient Gondwana forests\, a magpie imitated the fire sirens—a fire singer doing what she could. \nDasui was once the fire keeper at Guishan’s monastery. Caught between “destroyed” and “not destroyed\,” the student asks their question in the light of the fire at the end of the universe. Touchingly\, it’s because of a single phrase\, “It will be destroyed\,” that they travel back and forth for ten thousand miles\, alone. \n—Xuedou \nFires are in the heart\, fires warm the seas\, melt the Thwaites glacier\, light up the heavens\, make up the stars. The Buddha thought that this world was a burning house and I see his point\, but in Zen we like the spaciousness inside even the most difficult and persistent flames. \nJoin us on Sunday? \n—John Tarrant \nVideo now online: Predicament Koan 1\, The Goose in the Bottle\nVideo coming soon: Predicament Koan 2\, Hanging from a Branch by Your teeth  \n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Hanging from a Branch by Your Teeth! Predicament Koan 2 with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:John Tarrant takes up a series of predicament koans\, on Sundays\, for a few weeks.\nMeaning a small path into the Dao\, a class on predicaments. \nPredicament koans match the perilous and lunatic quality of life when everything is changing. I am plunged into the situation. My jaw hurts\, my arms wave around\, and I am not only desperate\, but lost. The predicament doesn’t even make sense—if I am holding on by my teeth\, my arms ought to be able to find something to grasp. But no\, it’s not so. Even making sense will not help. I’m on the edge and flailing\, about to fall. \nKOAN 2: \nYou are hanging from a branch by your teeth.\nYour arms can’t touch a branch.\nYour feet cannot find the trunk.\nSomeone appears beneath the tree and asks:\n“What is the meaning of Bodhidharma coming from the West?”\nIf you do not answer\, you fail the questioner.\nIf you do answer\, you lose your life. What will you do? \nThere is a lot to be said for turning towards your predicament\, and entering it without reservation. “Ah this is the best predicament for me! I shall turn toward it and discover many things.” The locked gate opens. \nJoin us Sunday\, and we’ll see about that gate. \n—John Tarrant \n\nVideo Now Online: Predicament Koan 1\, The Goose in the Bottle\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Goose in the Bottle with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Late summer is immense\, the party is beginning to end\, harvest is beginning\, thin trucks drive up and down all night in the vineyards with cyclops lights\, the garden is leggy as if the plants were on a reckless adventure. The year turns like a great being. Simplicity and modesty are in the wings\, and perhaps we can begin to feel their appeal. \nWe naturally want to rise up above our difficulties\, but the Way\, like the season\, turns out to be down and into the heart of what is darker and hard to understand. So\, we start with predicaments. The role of the guide is to accompany people\, so if we’re helping people\, that’s where we start\, too. \nKoans are both gates and predicaments. Here’s a predicament koan: \nThe Goose in the Bottle \nA woman raised a goose in a bottle\, and it grew\, and she wanted to get it out of the\nbottle. How will you get the goose out of the bottle? \nIt’s not so hard to say the ways we might be in a bottle. Buddha’s palace was his bottle. A marriage can be that. A job too. \nBut how do we get out? \nJoin us on Sunday? \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday.
