SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Why Did Bodhidharma? with Guest Host Jesse Cardin
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nSunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends \nThis Week: Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Co\n—Why did Bodhidharma? \nA student asked Xianglin\, “Why did Bodhidharma come from the West?”\nXianglin said\, “Sitting for a long time is tiring.” \nMost of the time\, if you ask me what I’m doing in my life\, I couldn’t quite tell you.\n“I don’t know\,” I might say\, or “I’m hungry\,” or “I’m about to go pick up my son from preschool.” \nIt might sound trite\, but it’s true. \nI look outside and the ‘ohi’a trees gaze back. I look inside and the cat is asleep on the bed.\nJust to be here is enough. The world will take care of your questions. \n—Jesse Cardin \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n—John Tarrant\, Jesse Cardin\, & all of us at PZI \n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Enchantment of the World & the Smell of Fresh Toast with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThe enchantment of the world needs examples—the smell of fresh toast\, the sight of a little finch hanging off a seeding thistle\, the gumboot dance invented by the miners of South Africa under the oppression of apartheid\, the sound of mahjong counters heard outside a darkened warehouse in which secret gambling is happening when everyone else has left for the night\, the sound of halyards slapping against metal masts in the harbor\, and of a sea lion hauling itself up on a slip\, the sound of the owl in darkest part of night; in a time of fear\, the eyes of the baby looking back. \nIn each moment the universe is taking us in\, demonstrating itself for us—a great artist constantly manifesting being\, all for us. \nWe too have a part in this. \nJoin us on Sunday. \n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Salt & Sauce\, Trouble & Spice\, Losing Things and Getting By with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThe grand master Mazu left to start his own temple in a remote province\, and no one had heard a peep from him for years.\nHis teacher sent someone to check on him. After a talk\, the emissary asked Mazu\, “How is it?”\nMazu replied\, “Since the war it’s been twenty years of getting by\, but I’ve never lacked for salt and sauce.” \nWith regard to miso\, there is intense dark barley miso\, brown rice miso\, sweet brown rice miso\, golden millet miso\, pale white rice miso for those who are not sure if they want something fermented; and with regard to soy sauce\, there is very dark soy and middle brown-colored soy and even paler soy to go with ginger and garlic and very hot oil poured over it\, making the rice and chili and eggplant intensely aromatic. Salt and sauce. \nIn times of outrage and war\, It’s very important to connect with the path. One way to think of it is as salt and sauce. That’s what we have to pass on\, so that there is a path for those to come. \nJoin us on Sunday. \n—John Tarrant \n \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Not Making Sense Is Better Than Ice Cream – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nWe usually think of making sense of things as our job\, tying the threads together\, explaining how we see things and why. \nAh\, the mind and heart scrabble\, wobble\, dabble\, babble and trouble themselves to connect all the dots in the universe. That is itself wonderful but it was wonderful already. \nSometimes praising is better than making sense. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Zen Arts – Pickles & Poems & Direct Encounter with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nZen is alive inside the arts and all the features of life\, from cooking to making pottery to painting. With a pure\, childlike spirit\, Ryokan put a poem on a child’s kite: \nThe sky above\, great wind. \nStudying haiku is Zen\, studying martial arts is Zen\, playing with children is Zen. \nJoin us to enjoy the great way of Zen. \n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Unmoving Mind Means Freely Moving: The Mind That Does Not Stick to Things – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:What do we do with our minds? \nTakuan Soho introduced and gave his name to the daikon pickle\, eaten by monks\, which you can still buy at a temple in Kyoto. He was a sword master and taught the art of living through paying deep attention. \nIt’s good to remember that the mind doesn’t have to be so noisy. We don’t need so many social media likes. \nTakuan said\, \nOne may explain water\, but the mouth will not become wet. One may expound fully on the nature of fire\, but the mouth will not become hot. If you follow the present-day world\, you will turn your back on the Way; if you would not turn your back on the Way\, do not follow the world. \nHe also said\, \nThere is no place to put the mind. When faced with a challenging situation\, put your mind completely in tune with the present moment. Your thoughts must cease to exist\, leaving only observation\, accurate understanding\, and purposeful action. \nJoin us on Sunday\, for an exploration of the depth of meditation. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Beauty and the Beast – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThere are many gates of entry in this fairy tale. We’ve been using the Italian version—Belinda and the Monster. \nThe monster gets a mysterious power from his rose bush. Belinda falls in love with him in spite of his ugliness. Her love breaks the spell that has been cast on him and he turns into a beautiful prince. Belinda says\, ”But I want the monster.” \nSlowly\, through practice she makes her way into her true path\, discovering what she most wants and who she really is.  \nSounds like what we are up to. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday with guest host Jesse Cardin Roshi: \n\nJingqing’s Sound of Raindrops \n\nJingqing asked a student\, “What’s that sound outside the door?”\n“The sound of raindrops\,” replied the student.\nJingqing said\, “People are upside down. They delude themselves and chase after things.”\n“What about you?”\n“I’m reaching to not lose myself.”\n“What do you mean by reaching to not lose yourself?”\nJingqing said\, “Being born is easy; the way of freedom is hard.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Refuge – No Escape Hatch Needed with John Tarrant & Allison Atwill
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Zen\, the hard parts of life are well advertised by the Buddha: sickness\, old age\, and death. They are reasons for practice—not for us to be intimidated\, and not to waste the gift of life in fear and sorrow. \nThough it is less well-advertised\, there is a secret door into summer and calm and welcome. The door of refuge is a deep structure in the human psyche. In all cultures\, it expresses an inmost desire and request. \nRefuge declares an ancient yearning to be loyal to life\, to love what we are given including those hard bits\, to find that door into the place where the birds are singing. \n—John Tarrant & Allison Atwill \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. \nWe love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n—John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, & all of us at PZI \n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Refuge Changes You - with John Tarrant & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nSunday Zen in the PZI Online Temple\nwith John Tarrant & Tess Beasley\nJuly 23rd at 10:30 AM Pacific Time \nWhen we take refuge\, we depend on uncertainty and emptiness and the general unreliability of the universe. This is called setting the world at peace. \nIt is\, of course\, a wild strange thing\, but it also gives us a path to walk\, and that is wonderful. It’s a path for us and also to be passed down to others. Refuge is based on contributing to the world\, helping beings of all kinds. Taking refuge is something to consider that might utterly change your life. \nIn the coming months\, we’ll be doing some courses on refuge followed by a Refuge Ceremony in October. \nJoin us for the beginning on Sunday\, \n—John Tarrant & Tess Beasley \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday.\nWe love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\n—John Tarrant\, Tess Beasley\, and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nJiashan’s Beautiful State of Mind \n\n\nA student asked Jiashan\, “What is your state of mind?” Jiashan answered\, “Monkeys\, clasping their young to their breasts\, return beyond the green peak: a bird with a flower in its beak alights before the blue cliff.” \nI’ve always loved this little story. In the mountains\, the world goes about its life without us needing to do anything. At the same time\, it’s happening within us as well as outside us. It’s a marvelous thing to feel this freedom. \nWhen the mind is still it’s not different from the world. \nLife continues with a kind of wonder\, and we don’t make even our mistakes a mistake. \nJoin us on Sunday. \n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Swimming Through the Titanic - with John Tarrant & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThere is a classic Zen koan about going to the bottom of the sea and bringing back a stone. Here’s the koan: \n\n\n12\,500 feet deep down\, in the midnight zone of the North Atlantic\, lies a sunken ship. I want to swim down and find the treasure there.  \nOur fascination with the Titanic endures. Even the name of the ship was the beginning of its loss; the titans stand in the psyche for whatever is gigantic and careless and ignores the laws of fate. The ship had to sink because it was unsinkable.  \nIn the spiritual world\, we often want to ascend immediately without offering anything of ourselves. But imperfection and loss are in the depths and are linked to the treasures of the deep. Sacrifice frees us. \nPerhaps the ship itself is a huge gift placed on the altar of the deep but we can’t leave her alone\, and she has become a restless dreamer\, calling people to her and sometimes destroying them. \nWe don’t need to be superior over nature\, and the more we prove that we are on top\, the more we suffer. \nJoin us on Sunday for a voyage into the deep. \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Throughout the Six Realms\, All Beings Are Free - with Guest Host Jesse Cardin
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Zen in the PZI Online Temple\nThroughout the Six Realms\, All Beings Are Free\nwith Guest Host Jesse Cardin\nJune 18th at 10:30 am Pacific Time  \n\nFrom what I’ve heard\, Buddhism is concerned with ending suffering. I guess I am\, too. \nIn one story about Guanyin (our patron saint of compassion)\, her head literally explodes when she tries to contemplate the suffering of all the beings left in hell. Fortunately\, Future-Buddha Amitabha comes along and gives her more heads. But then when she tries to help\, her arms explode too! So he gives her a thousand arms. It’s a kind of strategy\, I suppose. \nIf you live in the same world I do\, you’d probably agree her work is still not complete. And rightly so! She’s got to clear out the god realm\, the demigod realm\, the hungry ghost realm\, the hell realm\, the animal realm\, and the human realm. Talk about job security. \nSo what’s a bodhisattva to do? \nAlso\, in addition to the usual shindig\, I’ll stick around for thirty minutes after the program to take any comments and questions that might arise. \nHope to see you there! \n—Jesse \n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi\, Jesse Cardin Roshi\, & all of us at PZI \n(John Tarrant returns for his regular Sunday Zen on June 25th.)

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Nobility of Having a Practice - with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Meditation gets us away from reaching and grasping and winning and losing and honor and disgrace. This lack of ulterior motive makes meditation a friendly time. There is also a purification that goes on when we meditate every day\, or every week or every second. \n\n\nAll our daily reaching and grasping and getting somehow sticks to us and when we meditate it unsticks and falls off. We become faithful to life and even effort is not effort. \nChangqing Da’an said\,  \nI lived with Guishan for more than thirty years.\nI ate Guishan’s food\, I shat Guishan’s shit\, but I didn’t study Guishan’s Zen.\nAll I did was look after an ox.\nIf he got off the road\, I dragged him back; if he trampled the grain in others’ fields\,\nI trained him with a whip.\nFor a long time he was so pitiful\, at the mercy of everyone’s words!\nNow he’s changed into the white ox on the bare ground\, always right in front of my face.\nAll day long he clearly reveals himself; even if I chase him he doesn’t go away. \n(PZI Miscellaneous Koans\, Case 67: Guishan’s Zen) \nJoin us. \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Translucence of Life - with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nMeditation doesn’t add anything to life\, it does have a magical property of subtraction so that you feel welcome in the world and can welcome others. \n\n\nThe thickets in the mind are not so thorny and difficult\, and they themselves become doors. We didn’t do anything clever\, we just stopped tangling ourselves up. \nI spent six hours in the Santa Rosa DMV last Wednesday and even the lunatic quality of the bureaucracy is a doorway. \nEven the stones and hills have their own light. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Universe Is In A Tea Bowl - with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nI heard a friend was having a difficult time and called to check in. I found myself saying encouraging things: “Don’t blame yourself\, don’t blame others either\, you’ll never find your way through by doing that.” Then I thought\, oh no\, l’m giving advice\, a sincere movement but not really satisfying. \n\n\nA phrase from a calligraphy in one of the sub-temples of Daitokoji appeared in my mind: \nThe universe is in a tea bowl. \nThis phrase seemed like an open window. The view became larger. \nWe are lost many times in our lives. I suppose that is what suffering is: The feeling that we lost our wallet\, the person we depended on\, or the mind we are used to. These are all a matter of identity\, and it’s nice to get them back\, but who knows\, maybe it’s a hindrance too. \nThe universe is in a tea bowl. \nWandering through the temple rooms of Daitokuji\, I saw sayings such as “Buddha is your thoughts and feelings.” Then I saw a sign pointing to a path into the trees\, saying\, “Go into Nature and meet the Buddha.” \nI liked that\, too. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Stories from Kyoto & the Ancient Road Home - with Guest Host Tess Beasley & Co
DESCRIPTION:Tess Beasley Sensei is guest teaching today. Come join us! (John Tarrant is away this week.) \n\n\n\nWhere will you meet the Buddha who has no country? \n\n\nJoin Tess Beasley for Stories from Kyoto and the Ancient Road Home \nA student asked Jiashan\, “What if you sweep away the dust and see the Buddha?”\nJiashan said\, “You have to wield your sword. If you don’t\, you’ll be like a fisherman\nstuck in a tangle of reeds\, unable to catch a single fish.”\nThe student then asked Shishuang\, “What if you sweep away the dust and see the Buddha?”\nShishuang said\, “The Buddha has no country. Where will you meet her?” \n—Book of Serenity\, Case 68 \nIn the hills of Kyoto\, just beyond the temple- and tourist-lined paths of an ancient bamboo grove\, lies a steep ascent and heavy wooden gate. A small sign offers tea and a chance to meet the Buddha in the garden within. Come! Just a few hundred yen\, or a few dollars\, will gain you admission. \nBut one need not travel so far to meet the Buddha. Entering the garden of your own life is enough. The old Zen masters discovered long ago that glimpsing the face of awakened mind requires no special conditions at all. \nAnd\, as it turns out\, the fewer ideas we carry about who we’ll meet\, where\, or when\, reveals a standing invitation to the golden light peeking out from everywhere. Even the jagged edges of the journey help guide the way home. \nJoin us Sunday for meditation\, music\, and stories from the ancient road. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Undividing the World - with Jesse Cardin & Co
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\nJesse Cardin is guest host today—join us! (John Tarrant is away in May.) \n\nIn ancient Hawai’i there was a giant slab of rock called the Naha stone. \nIt was found on the banks of the Wailua River on the island of Kaua’i\, but was carried by double-hulled canoe to the city of Hilo. There it became a symbol of the Naha clan. It was believed that whoever could turn over the 7\,000-pound stone would be granted power to unify all the kingdoms of all the islands of Hawai’i. \nIt is said that at the age of 14\, King Kamehameha the Great lifted and toppled the stone. Later in life he fulfilled the prophecy\, unifying all of Hawai’i under his rule. \nHow did King Kamehameha the Great turn over the 7\,000 pound Naha stone?\nHow do you unify all of Hawai’i? \n—Hawai’ian myth and … koan? \nIt’s easy to see how we divide the world: masculine and feminine\, rich and poor\, Republican and Democrat. But where are those divisions when you look in the eyes of a child? When a whale breaches unexpectedly or the scent of an unfamiliar flower touches your nose? \nThe impossible task of koans is to just be here. \nWhen you realize that\, a 7\,000-pound stone will feel light as a feather and all the world will be united. \nSee you on Sunday\, \nJesse \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us. \n\n\nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\n—John Tarrant\, Jesse Cardin\, and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to: Sunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n*The Firefox browser may not allow you to access PZI registration buttons.\nPlease try an alternate one\, like Chrome or Safari.

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Things I Thought I Knew with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Co
DESCRIPTION:Dizang asked Fayan\, “Where are you going from here?”\nFayan said\, “I’m on pilgrimage.”\n“What sort of thing is pilgrimage?”\n“I don’t know.”\n“Not knowing is most intimate.”\nFayan suddenly had a great awakening. \n—PZI Miscellaneous Koans Case 62 & Book of Serenity Case 20 \nHere in the rainforest\, ‘ohi’a lehua blossoms cut through the mist like tiny red shouts. Kalij pheasants rustle and mingle among bright green stalks of ginger. \nWhat a strange and wild ride it’s been\, returning to Hawai’i after all these years. So many unanticipated barriers and also problems that never came to be. Perhaps the strangest thing has been my sudden inexplicable interest in things I never cared about before: gardening\, weaving straw mats\, trying unknown foods at the farmer’s market. \nRemarkable things can happen when we make ourselves available to life. The old and worn becomes fresh and new. Turtles\, stars\, and the whole great earth rise to meet us. \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday.\nWe love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\n—John Tarrant\, Jesse Cardin\, and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n*The Firefox browser may not allow you to access PZI registration buttons. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Watching the Tracks of the Flying Birds - with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Freely my gaze follows the tracks of the flying birds\nThere is something free and relaxed in the core of life; no matter how much our circumstances press on us\, the birds fly and we fly with them\, the birds sing and in our hearts we sing. \nIn the Blue Cliff Record\, the poet says: \nPlacidly walking along\,\n         I extinguish the sound of the flowing stream.\n         Freely I follow the tracks of the flying birds\,\n         the grasses grow thick\,\n         the mists overhang. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Kingdom Is At Peace - with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:The mandala goes out into the cosmos where giant black holes are tearing along through halos of gas and leaving in their wake a bridge of stars 200\,000 light years long. The mandala goes inward to the infinite heart of what it is to be human. All things are connected inside too. \nInside the mandala\, the buddha realms of infinite light and joy\, the demon realms\, the pains of the planet\, a child’s smile\, laughter and meeting\, are all contained. There is peace. There is infinite peace. \nFour seas and five lakes are all under the reign of the king and the queen.  (Book of Serenity) \nJoin us! SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Sun Face Buddha\, Moon Face Buddha - with Guest Host Tess Beasley & Co
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nSun Face Buddha\, Moon Face Buddha: Savoring the Eternal & Ephemeral\nHi Friends\, \nJohn Tarrant is on the mend\, but really needs his rest; so we’ll gather once more and keep his seat warm this Sunday. I look forward to being with you. \nWe’ll pull up a cushion for Great Ancestor Ma\, too\, who in the canonical Blue Cliff Record offers a glimpse into the eternal and ephemeral inside each of us\, and indeed inside everything—and the great beauty of savoring them both as we surf the uncertainty of our lives. \nAncestor Ma was sick.\nThe superintendent of the monastery asked him\, “How are you feeling these days?”\nThe ancestor said\, “Sun face Buddha\, moon face Buddha.” \nWe cannot help but be shaped by our encounters with sickness\, aging\, and death; it is no mistake they arrive as messengers to young Siddhartha in concert with the path to freedom. In brushing up against all that crumbles and fades\, we are met and held by that which endures. The ancestors called it simply: This. \n“Life has not forgotten you\,” says Rilke\, “that it holds you in its hand…it will not let you fall.” \nJoin us for stories\, music\, companionship and deep silence. \n—Tess Beasley \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday.\nWe love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\n—John Tarrant\, Tess Beasley\, and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n*The Firefox browser may not allow you to access PZI registration buttons. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Red Thread - with Guest Host Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThe red thread is a famous image in Zen. Buddha said that the passions\, especially desire is the source of suffering—a monastic attitude. The Zen attitude though is that we can’t abandon the world and must find ways to live in it. \n\n\nThe Zen koan goes\, \nWhy can’t accomplished Bodhisattvas and saints sever the red thread? \nIn Zen we have to come to terms with passion\, desire\, being permeable to life\, having life and letting life have you. All of compassion and tenderness come from the red thread. \nJoin us!  —Tess Beasley \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: We've Never Lacked for Salt & Sauce with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nAfter Mazu received the Dharma\, he went far away to Jiangxi to spread the teachings. One day\, his teacher said\, “Mazu is in Jiangxi teaching the Dharma\, but there’s been no word from him.” \nHe said to one of his attendants\, “Go to Mazu’s place\, wait until he gives a lecture\, then ask\, ‘How is it?’ Remember what he says\, then come and tell me.” \nThe monk did as instructed\, waiting for a lecture and then asking Mazu\,“How is it?” \nMazu replied\, “Since the turmoil of the barbarian invasions\, it’s been it’s been thirty years of temporary getting by\, but I’ve never lacked for salt or sauce.”  \n—Great Ancestor Horse (Master Ma): Mazu’s Salt and Sauce \n\n \n  \n  \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday.
