SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Loving This Life\, the One We Have – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Encouraging the world\, blessing the creatures\, speaking a good word. \nThe Zen idea is that we need and we can find a pathway\, make a pathway\, through the dark. One way that we can navigate in the vast uncertainty is to praise each other\, to console each other\, to appreciate and extend a hand. \nWe keep each other company on the paths through the forests and dark shapes. This makes our lives kinder and gives us a connection to eternal things. What do we ask then? We don’t ask “What will I get out of this?” We ask\, “What is this marvelous thing going on?” \nWhat is going on then? \nWhat’s going on is the path we walk\, and that we are companions. It’s something that we give\, and which we do together. It is not for something. It is enough in itself\, it is more than enough. \n \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Hearing the Cries\, Blessing the World: The Kanzeon Sutra with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:And if I cried out\, who would hear me among the angelic orders?\n\n\n—Rilke\, First Duino Elegy \nKanzeon is the deity of mercy. Her name means\, “The one who hears the sounds of the world.” Most of us would like a little mercy sometimes—an embrace\, a consolation\, the appearance of a secret harmony. Kanzeon doesn’t think anyone unworthy\, and we’re close to her or him when we realize\, “Oh yes\, we’re all in the soup together.” Buddha nature pervades the whole universe. \nThe Kanzeon Sutra says\, “Eternity is full of joy\,” which is consoling but also gives us a task—to notice more minutely and delightedly as the mind composes itself into a pattern like a flock of sparrows. \nKanzeon is the sutra for setting out in the new year\, and for setting out into the next life. When we notice that we are always secretly accompanied\, that is the living presence of Kanzeon. She watches over our practice. \nJoin us this first Sunday of the new year. \n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Invoking the Light: A New Year's Eve Meditation Revel with John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, Tess Beasley & Friends
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the year we’re falling asleep and waking up again. \nThe old boat is sailing off laden with its gifts and sorrows\, and the New Year—who knows what it will bring\, what we will discover\, what new fear will confront us and what we will love? \nAll we know is that we are companions on the way and that it is good to be here\, it is wonderful in fact. Each moment carries its piece of eternity and I am glad to have you as companions. Basho the poet had a good feel for the moments that end and begin the year. \nA cold rain starting\nand no hat—\n    so? \nAnother year gone—\nhat in hand\,\n    sandals on my feet. \nNew Year’s Day\,\neating\nraw fish \nWhen the winter chrysanthemums go\,\nthere’s nothing to write about but radishes \nNew Year’s Day\nThe monkey\nwears a monkey mask \nIn order to wake up we need to fall asleep\, to surrender to the great current that we know little about and which we cannot control or direct. \nThe deer move silently in the twilight\, the trees wave their bare\, thin limbs\, the sun offers a rim of sullen fire at the horizon. Then the marvelous appears. We can step forward into lives we have not known before. \n—John Tarrant \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n—John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley \n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: New Directions at Year’s End: The Quest for the Grail with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThe Grail Quest is deeper than most stories; it was told at a time of great change in Western culture and might help us now. We meet the wounded Fisher King and go to his mysterious palace in a wasteland\, we see marvels but the palace disappears when we leave. We are instructed and excoriated by a sorceress who is a monster with tusks but also learned\, wears a cape with turtle dove designs\, and helps us resolve our quest. Love is an important part of the mystery. \nPeople go to abandoned places to search for their true nature.\nAt such a moment\, honored one\, where is your true nature? \n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Stepping Off the Hundred-Foot Pole with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\nTake a step from the top of the hundred-foot pole. \nChangsha said\, \nThe enlightened person sits on the top of a hundred-foot pole;\nShe has entered the way but it is not yet real.\nShe must take a step from the top of the pole\,\nAnd worlds in the ten directions will be her complete body. \nThis was the first koan I ever spoke on. I had a very small audience and was not convinced that I should teach. I think I unconsciously chose this koan without realizing that I was taking a risk and plunging into the unknown. \nFor all creative activity we must step from a high place without guarantees. There is something exhilarating about that act. That’s the way to live! \n\n\n—John Tarrant \n\n\n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Gratitude Like Sunrise Spreads Across the Land – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\nTasting the Strawberry \nGratitude like sunrise spreads across the low horizon. The colors blend and change. It is surprising and penetrates fear\, just enough to open an escape hatch. \nQuestions are good\, they make the predictable troubles and dangers strange. There are other good questions. What color is thank you? \nSome time ago\, I wrote a poem called\, “Thank you is red.” OK\, but what other colors are on the horizon? Thank you is yellow too. What is the fragrance of this day? What animal paces by? \nJoin us for a window into the wide plain and wildness. \nKoan work is a healing and exemplary thing. We can all do it together\, wake up together. \n\n\n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Anxiety in Autumn – The Golden Wind Is Revealing Itself with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Anxiety in Autumn: There Is a Way Through – The Golden Wind Is Revealing Itself \n\n\nThis is the autumn of anxiety. There are always things in our minds that we didn’t put there. People are dying. Our minds are anxious. \nWe don’t get much say over what the world does and we don’t get much say over what enters our minds. That’s what minds are for. \nOur job is to hold steady for the world\, for those to come\, to make a path for people to follow. A student asked the great sage Yunmen\, \n“When the tree withers and the leaves fall\, what is happening?”\nYunmen said\, “The Golden Wind is revealing itself.” \nJoin us on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Losing Things\, Finding Things with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nLost and Found: Yunmen’s Coin \nSomeone asked Yunmen\,\n“What does ‘sitting correctly and contemplating true reality’ mean?” \nThe Master said\, “A coin lost in the river is found in the river.” \nLosing can be freeing. \nWhen I was far away and found out that my house was believed lost\, the first thing I felt was freedom. \nMainly what we want to lose is our idea of how things have to be\, our idea of the next move and what is needed. \nThis is why losing is so interesting. It is full of space. \nWhen I was about three or four\, a little boy across the road said that robbers had come into his house in the night and stolen his toys. I said\, “I’ll give you some of mine\,” and actually I gave him most of them. My parents who had no money wondered where my toys were and went across the road and got them back. That was good\, but not having toys was very interesting; the gold coin was also there. \nAll the new thinking is about loss. \nIn this it resembles all the old thinking. \n(Robert Hass) \nJoin us for lost and found\, \n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Nightmares in the Closet\, Anxiety\, & the Deepest Meditation with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Not Making Sense\n\n\nIn the world of not making sense\, the trees make a path and your foot steps onto it. \nIn the world of anxiety and stress we can always help others. And that’s what we do. The thing is not to seize a delusion to believe in. \nThis talk is an exploration of the Bodhisattva Path—just by wondering about such things\, we help the world. It’s alright that things are as they are. \nJoin us for meditation.
