DESCRIPTION:John Tarrant is away on retreat this week. \nCome join us next on the 28th! \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Following the Scented Grasses\, Chasing Falling Blossoms with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nOne day Changsha went wandering in the mountains. That’s today and Changsha is you. When he returned\, the head of practice met him at the gate and asked\, “Where have you been?” \n“Wandering in the mountains.” \n“Where did you go?” \n“I went out following the scented grasses and returned chasing the falling blossoms. \nOn the other hand\, spring can sink into the vastness\, tangled up\, as invisible as your buddha nature. \nA woman called Yu worked in town making doughnuts. She said\, \n“There’s a woman of no rank with six arms and three heads\, working furiously\, smashing Flower Mountain in two with one blow. Her strength is like the ever-flowing water\, which doesn’t know about the coming of spring.” \nSpring tumbles over itself as it appears\, flowers\, young foxes\, cows and birds with the necessary twigs for a happy home. Joy! Joy! Wandering in the mountains never ends. \nJoin us for a bit of a wander this Sunday! \n\n\n \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Zen Is Play\, Zen Is Laughter\, Zen Is Jokes & Dreams – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nEnjoy yourself. When things are turned upside down it’s usually funny. \nThe teacher of an earnest student said something absurd and the student puzzled for a moment and then asked\, “Roshi\, are you joking?” \n“If it’s not funny it’s not Buddhism\,” said the Roshi. \nI think it has to be that way; join us and check it out. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Happy in the Rain\, Happy When There’s Trouble\, Happy in the Spring Fields: An Inquiry Into Happiness with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nhappy in the rain\nhappy when there’s trouble\nhappy in the spring fields\nbirds carrying twigs \nAnd what about being happy when you are unhappy? We’ve all met that\, experienced that\, been that child feeling the difficulty of the world as a more intense life. There are many attempts to deconstruct unhappiness\, such as “Do you really believe that thought?” \nMostly\, though it’s nice to shed what is difficult\, it’s nice not to bother with certainty; there are no obstacles to just letting the afternoon embrace you. \nIt’s nice to dance through life in a transparent way. \nHappiness can be a good\, plain thing in which your heart swells and you find no fault with the world or anyone in it. \nJoin us this Easter Sunday. \n—John Tarrant \n \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: In Delusion\, You're Like a Knight in a Dream – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Serenity and the True Life: Great Yangshan’s Dream \nHere’s a poem from The Book of Serenity:\n\nIn a dream how can you know the dream is unreal?\nOnly when you’ve awakened do you realize what was in the dream is nonexistent.\nWhen deluded you’re like a knight in a dream\,\nAfter enlightenment like a farm hand rising from sleep. \nA simple life is good. Serenity comes in the midst of upheaval.\nThe lion roars\, the mind is as peaceful as the ocean. \nThese meditations can bring serenity for the rest of your life.\nSitting together the temple gets built. \nJoin us. \n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Knowing the Heart-Mind at Peace with Guest Host Tess Beasley & Friends
DESCRIPTION:A verse in the Gateless Gate Collection says: \nBetter than knowing the body is knowing the heart-mind at peace;\nwhen the mind is realized\, the body is no longer anxious.\nWhen body and mind are fully realized\, the saintly hermit has no wish to become a noble. \nForget the big arguments with reality\, it’s the little things that accumulate strife and unrest: egregiously long lines\, blaring radios\, misbehaving weather\, nights of fitful sleep or illness or loneliness. \nIt’s easy to imagine peace as some kind of respite from the onslaughts\, or some capacity to remain unperturbed amidst the mess; but real peace appears only when we realize it has little to do with circumstance and everything to do with our willingness to embrace the life we have. \nThe particular difficulties\, gifts\, and ancestors that arrive in our lives are no mistake\, and each holds a piece of our freedom. To bring ourselves to meditation is to open a door and receive them\, and to be less sure about the nature of our quest. \nJoin us for meditation\, music\, and conversation with friends. \n—Tess Beasley \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n—John Tarrant & All of Us at PZI \n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: You Find Yourself Locked in a Stone Crypt: How Will You Get Free? with Guest Host David Weinstein
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nYou find yourself in a stone crypt.\nThere are no windows\, and the door is locked from the outside.\nHow will you get out? \n—PZI Miscellaneous Koan \nSitting with the stone crypt koan in our morning meditation this past week\, another koan keeps coming to join the conversation: that one about getting a goose that’s trapped in a bottle out of the bottle without breaking the bottle (or hurting the goose). That kind of thing can happen in koan practice; a second or third koan can join the conversation. It can cause some confusion\, as if the koans are in competition for my attention. With time it’s possible to appreciate how the koans are not competing but resonating with each other. \nIn both koans we are asked how to get out. In some translations we are asked\, “How are you free?” which is interesting. The perspectives are different: In one\, I am locked in and in the other\, it’s the goose that’s locked in and I am outside the bottle observing the goose inside. But who is that goose\, really? And who is the woman who raises the goose in the bottle\, really? And what are the crypt and the bottle\, really? \nIn the crypt there are no windows\, it is dark\, I can’t see my hand in front of my face. In the case of the goose\, the bottle is clear\, at least my bottle is—maybe yours isn’t. I can see out and the outside can see in. \nBoth resonate with places where I can sometimes find myself. Sometimes I’m in the dark about being trapped in my delusions. Sometimes I can see quite clearly how I am trapped. The term “conscious incompetence” comes to mind—knowing that I am trapped\, but that knowledge being of no help. Seeing that can help\, so long as I don’t judge myself for being an idiot\, which makes it worse. \nThe koan says\, “I find myself locked in a stone crypt.” I am in the dark about how I got there. The goose koan tells me that this was done intentionally\, by a woman (who is me)\, for what reason I can only imagine. That’s what koans invite us to do: imagine. Imagine that I am the woman\, imagine that I am the goose\, imagine that I am the bottle\, imagine that I am in a place so dark that I cannot see my hand in front of my face. \nThese koans are not hypothetical situations; they are mirrors reflecting us back to ourselves\, an opportunity to see more clearly who we are and what life is. In each case there is something about getting out of our own way and being who we really are. \n—David Weinstein \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday.

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Worst Horse\, Part 2 with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nIn the Buddhist scriptures (Samyuktagama Sutra\, Volume 33)\, it is said that there are four kinds of horses: excellent ones\, good ones\, poor ones\, and terrible ones. The best horse runs at the shadow of the whip\, and so on down. \nUsually it’s a fine idea to want to be a better horse or at least not a terrible horse\, to improve yourself\, etcetera. \nBut there’s something to be said for being the worst horse. Shunryu Suzuki liked that idea. It is modest. It trusts your life. The worst horse might be the only one who is not trying to cover up their flaws. \nThe worst horse is the clueless youngest child in the fairy tale who helps the beggar and gets the instructions to the treasure\, or marries the beast who becomes a prince. \nThis Sunday morning let’s all enjoy being the worst horse and trusting our lives. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Simplicities: The Mind Grows Quiet and the World Is Still—Our Lives Come Near to Us Like Deer in the Twilight with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, the mind grows quiet and the world too is still. Our lives come nearer to us. Because we are open to ourselves\, the world comes to meet us. So do the trees and animals. In the storm the deer shelter in the old sheep shed. The apricot blossoms struggle out and the sparrows eat them immediately\, the taste of something sweet. \nThe grass is very green; in the midst of calm there is joy. \nJoin us on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Receiving the Treasure\, Handing Down Your Treasure: Our Great Lineage with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:I notice doing ceremonies\, such as funerals and weddings\, and taking part in them myself\, there is a consolation and even delight in resting in the old forms. It’s not about belief but there’s a respect for those who have gone before us and established a way. In times of sorrow and in times of joy there is still a path. \nIt’s passed on in the dark\, hand reaching for hand. \nWe too are linked by the threads that link the stars. And we’re tangled up with each other. \nJoin us on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Strange Coincidences of Love: Doves\, Swans\, Companionship\, Adoration\, & Who Loves? with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Here is Raymond Carver’s poem\, ‘Late fragment’: \nAnd did you get what\nyou wanted from this life\, even so?\nYes I did.\nAnd what did you want?\nTo call myself beloved\, to feel myself\nbeloved on the earth. \nIt’s not about what you might think\, this love business. \nLove comes from inside\, it makes us at home\, calling ourselves beloved. In a way it is a description of kensho. We feel ourselves beloved and we are so grateful to those who love us too. \nJoin us this Sunday. \n \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Return to the Pure Land with Guest Host Jesse Cardin
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nThere was a woman who kept the pilgrim’s inn at Hara under Mount Fuji. Her name is unknown\, and it is not known when she was born or died. \nShe went to hear a talk by Hakuin\, who said\, “The Pure Land where everything is only mind\, the Buddha of Infinite Light in your own body—once Amida appears\, mountains\, rivers\, and earth\, plants\, trees\, and forests\, all glow with a great light. If you want to see this\, look into your own heart. Since the Pure Land is only mind\, what kind of special features would it have? Since the Buddha of Infinite Light is your own body\, how would you recognize it?” \nWhen she heard this\, the woman said to herself\, “This isn’t so hard.” \nReturning home\, she meditated day and night\, asking these questions while she was awake and during sleep. One day\, as she was washing a pot\, she had a sudden breakthrough. She tossed the pot aside and rushed to see Hakuin. \nShe said\, “I’ve run across Amida in my own body\, and everything on earth is shining with a great light. It’s wonderful!” She danced for joy. \n“Is that so?” Hakuin asked\, “But what about a pile of shit—does it shine with a great light too?” \nThe woman ran up and slapped him\, saying\, “You still don’t get it\, you old fart!” \nHakuin roared with laughter. \n—PZI Miscellaneous Koans\, Case 32 \nI remember the afternoon after my first sesshin at St. Dorothy’s Rest.  I wasn’t sure I was coming away with anything other than a sense relief that I’d survived all seven days. But arriving at my hotel that afternoon\, I saw a dirty pickup truck that was just exquisite to look at. I’d never seen anything so clean\, so crisp and so Here. \nThe whole universe is available to us in this way. All we have to do is return. \nJoin us on Sunday. \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: The Harmonies with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:I’m restless and my body hurts\, and in the middle of the night\, I come out to the living room and it’s been waiting for me; the night is so happy to see me\, and the owl opens its door and I can hear the conversation of the winter stars. \nI can’t shed  the thrill of being\, breathing\, seeing\, and hearing. This is what we came for. \nEverything we ever wanted appears. \nIt’s good not to be alone in the universe. And I can ask you to join me for meditation on Sunday morning. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Surprise Unmakes the World with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Surprise unmakes the world. Perhaps it’s better to say it unmakes us. How large the world gets when we are surprised. When we pay attention\, every single moment is a surprise. The world steps forward\, shimmering \n\n\nThe old Zen saying is that expecting things is like eating painted cake. \nWhen we are not expecting something\, people to be nice to each other at Xmas\, for example\, what actually happens can be wonderful. When we are not looking\, that’s when our lives change. \nLet’s be surprised. \n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Loving This Life\, the One We Have – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Encouraging the world\, blessing the creatures\, speaking a good word. \nThe Zen idea is that we need and we can find a pathway\, make a pathway\, through the dark. One way that we can navigate in the vast uncertainty is to praise each other\, to console each other\, to appreciate and extend a hand. \nWe keep each other company on the paths through the forests and dark shapes. This makes our lives kinder and gives us a connection to eternal things. What do we ask then? We don’t ask “What will I get out of this?” We ask\, “What is this marvelous thing going on?” \nWhat is going on then? \nWhat’s going on is the path we walk\, and that we are companions. It’s something that we give\, and which we do together. It is not for something. It is enough in itself\, it is more than enough. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Hearing the Cries\, Blessing the World: The Kanzeon Sutra with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:And if I cried out\, who would hear me among the angelic orders?\n\n\n—Rilke\, First Duino Elegy \nKanzeon is the deity of mercy. Her name means\, “The one who hears the sounds of the world.” Most of us would like a little mercy sometimes—an embrace\, a consolation\, the appearance of a secret harmony. Kanzeon doesn’t think anyone unworthy\, and we’re close to her or him when we realize\, “Oh yes\, we’re all in the soup together.” Buddha nature pervades the whole universe. \nThe Kanzeon Sutra says\, “Eternity is full of joy\,” which is consoling but also gives us a task—to notice more minutely and delightedly as the mind composes itself into a pattern like a flock of sparrows. \nKanzeon is the sutra for setting out in the new year\, and for setting out into the next life. When we notice that we are always secretly accompanied\, that is the living presence of Kanzeon. She watches over our practice. \nJoin us this first Sunday of the new year. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Invoking the Light: A New Year's Eve Meditation Revel with John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill\, Tess Beasley & Friends
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the year we’re falling asleep and waking up again. \nThe old boat is sailing off laden with its gifts and sorrows\, and the New Year—who knows what it will bring\, what we will discover\, what new fear will confront us and what we will love? \nAll we know is that we are companions on the way and that it is good to be here\, it is wonderful in fact. Each moment carries its piece of eternity and I am glad to have you as companions. Basho the poet had a good feel for the moments that end and begin the year. \nA cold rain starting\nand no hat—\n    so? \nAnother year gone—\nhat in hand\,\n    sandals on my feet. \nNew Year’s Day\,\neating\nraw fish \nWhen the winter chrysanthemums go\,\nthere’s nothing to write about but radishes \nNew Year’s Day\nThe monkey\nwears a monkey mask \nIn order to wake up we need to fall asleep\, to surrender to the great current that we know little about and which we cannot control or direct. \nThe deer move silently in the twilight\, the trees wave their bare\, thin limbs\, the sun offers a rim of sullen fire at the horizon. Then the marvelous appears. We can step forward into lives we have not known before. \n—John Tarrant \n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us. \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n—John Tarrant\, Allison Atwill & Tess Beasley \n\nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: New Directions at Year’s End: The Quest for the Grail with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nThe Grail Quest is deeper than most stories; it was told at a time of great change in Western culture and might help us now. We meet the wounded Fisher King and go to his mysterious palace in a wasteland\, we see marvels but the palace disappears when we leave. We are instructed and excoriated by a sorceress who is a monster with tusks but also learned\, wears a cape with turtle dove designs\, and helps us resolve our quest. Love is an important part of the mystery. \nPeople go to abandoned places to search for their true nature.\nAt such a moment\, honored one\, where is your true nature? \n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Stepping Off the Hundred-Foot Pole with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\nTake a step from the top of the hundred-foot pole. \nChangsha said\, \nThe enlightened person sits on the top of a hundred-foot pole;\nShe has entered the way but it is not yet real.\nShe must take a step from the top of the pole\,\nAnd worlds in the ten directions will be her complete body. \nThis was the first koan I ever spoke on. I had a very small audience and was not convinced that I should teach. I think I unconsciously chose this koan without realizing that I was taking a risk and plunging into the unknown. \nFor all creative activity we must step from a high place without guarantees. There is something exhilarating about that act. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Gratitude Like Sunrise Spreads Across the Land – with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\nTasting the Strawberry \nGratitude like sunrise spreads across the low horizon. The colors blend and change. It is surprising and penetrates fear\, just enough to open an escape hatch. \nQuestions are good\, they make the predictable troubles and dangers strange. There are other good questions. What color is thank you? \nSome time ago\, I wrote a poem called\, “Thank you is red.” OK\, but what other colors are on the horizon? Thank you is yellow too. What is the fragrance of this day? What animal paces by? \nJoin us for a window into the wide plain and wildness. \nKoan work is a healing and exemplary thing. We can all do it together\, wake up together. \n\n\n\n\n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Anxiety in Autumn – The Golden Wind Is Revealing Itself with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Anxiety in Autumn: There Is a Way Through – The Golden Wind Is Revealing Itself \n\n\nThis is the autumn of anxiety. There are always things in our minds that we didn’t put there. People are dying. Our minds are anxious. \nWe don’t get much say over what the world does and we don’t get much say over what enters our minds. That’s what minds are for. \nOur job is to hold steady for the world\, for those to come\, to make a path for people to follow. A student asked the great sage Yunmen\, \n“When the tree withers and the leaves fall\, what is happening?”\nYunmen said\, “The Golden Wind is revealing itself.” \nJoin us on Sunday.

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Losing Things\, Finding Things with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n\n\nLost and Found: Yunmen’s Coin \nSomeone asked Yunmen\,\n“What does ‘sitting correctly and contemplating true reality’ mean?” \nThe Master said\, “A coin lost in the river is found in the river.” \nLosing can be freeing. \nWhen I was far away and found out that my house was believed lost\, the first thing I felt was freedom. \nMainly what we want to lose is our idea of how things have to be\, our idea of the next move and what is needed. \nThis is why losing is so interesting. It is full of space. \nWhen I was about three or four\, a little boy across the road said that robbers had come into his house in the night and stolen his toys. I said\, “I’ll give you some of mine\,” and actually I gave him most of them. My parents who had no money wondered where my toys were and went across the road and got them back. That was good\, but not having toys was very interesting; the gold coin was also there. \nAll the new thinking is about loss. \nIn this it resembles all the old thinking. \n(Robert Hass) \nJoin us for lost and found\, \n—John Tarrant \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Nightmares in the Closet\, Anxiety\, & the Deepest Meditation with John Tarrant & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Not Making Sense\n\n\nIn the world of not making sense\, the trees make a path and your foot steps onto it. \nIn the world of anxiety and stress we can always help others. And that’s what we do. The thing is not to seize a delusion to believe in. \nThis talk is an exploration of the Bodhisattva Path—just by wondering about such things\, we help the world. It’s alright that things are as they are. \nJoin us for meditation.
