SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with John Tarrant & Friends: He Finds Himself in a Stone Crypt
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nPlants grow when I’m sleeping\, perhaps awakening does\, too. \nEveryone has their own predicament\, and—who knows? \nLet’s start with being a body in pain; the body has its own trajectory. \nWhat does it mean to turn towards the unsympathetic moment? \nThat’s what enlightenment is\, too\, a moment unsympathetic to everything previously understood. \nJoin us on Sunday. \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI

SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: When Useless Things Don’t Stick in the Mind
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nSpring comes with its flowers\, autumn with the moon.\nSummer with breezes\, winter with the snow\,\nwhen useless things don’t cloud the mind\nthat is the good season. \n(Wumen’s Verse) \nThis raises the question about what should stick in the mind? \nThe Blue Cliff Record starts with\, “Knock on any door; someone will answer.” \nThe irises dying\, the dahlias not yet arrived—is this our moment of beauty? \nThe idea is that you can enter from anywhere—a child’s eyes\, a single leaf falling\, a feeling in your own heart. \nWhatever appears is a door. \nDeparting spring\,\nbirds cry out\ntears in the eyes of fish \n(Basho) \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: Calming the Mind\, Protecting the Mind\, Trusting the Mind
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nIf you try to calm the mind\, you just make waves. If you don’t practice\, well you are just lost in Delusionville. What to do? \nChangqing Da’an said\, “I lived with Guishan for more than thirty years. I ate Guishan’s food\, I shat Guishan’s shit\, but I didn’t study Guishan’s Zen. All I did was look after an ox. If he got off the road\, I dragged him back; if he trampled the grain in others’ fields\, I trained him with a whip. For a long time he was so pitiful\, at the mercy of everyone’s words! Now he’s changed into the white ox on the bare ground\, always right in front of my face. All day long he clearly reveals himself; even if I chase him he doesn’t go away.” \nJoin us on Sunday\, Friends\, to examine the question of meditation. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: Without Comparing Yourself With Others
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nWithout comparing yourself with others\, take a step. “But what will they think of me?” You might ask. \n“Ah\, who cares?” We live for a short time and every moment is sacred\, every moment free. And then we have the idea of kawai—Everyone is cute like Hello Kitty\, and having a good time being themselves. \nWalking in the moonlight\, walking after the moon has set\, a solemn step and another. \nHere’s the koan about what happens when you stop comparing: \nShoushan said to his assembly\, “If you get it the first time you hear it\, you’ll teach buddhas and ancestors. If you get it the second time you hear it\, you’ll teach gods and humans. If you don’t get it until the third time\, you won’t even be able to save Yourself.” \nA student asked\, “When did you get it?”\nShoushan said\, “The moon sets at midnight\, I walk alone through the town.” \n—Book of Serenity Case 76 \n—John Tarrant Roshi \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: Guanyin: She Hears the Sounds of the World
DESCRIPTION:Mother’s day\, it’s Guanyin’s day.\nWhat is the role of compassion in the world?\nHer robe is the mist and the stars\, and there is no one she does not welcome.\nShe appears in koans and in dreams\, even after she has gone.\nShe is needed in a difficult time.\nThink of something you would like to say to her. \nJoin us this Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: The Pilgrim’s Way
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nOne foot and then the other foot\, and then again\, and suddenly we’re on a journey. Our walking transforms us; we find that it’s not so hard to be at peace inwardly. \nThis is in spite of all that arrives: threatening\, painful\, and also as bright as the peonies in spring. Every step we take is into the unknown\, however\, others have walked the way before us\, and others will come after us—how many generations\, no one knows. The pilgrimage of this life is also joyous. Yes\, joy is a marvelous\, sudden thing and rises out of the depths\, rises in us\, and then we care for the world and each other. \nThat’s what I’ve noticed. \nLet’s have a meeting about the pilgrim’s way this Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: How To Love The World We Have
DESCRIPTION:Acts of kindness\, acts of disaster\, kindness\, disaster\, kindness… \nIn human news\, Billy\, a factory trained mechanic\, drives out to rescue my daughter when my truck\, which she has borrowed\, breaks. I’m away and when I call him\, he refuses payment\, “Put down that phone\,” he says\, “End this call now!” \nIn Corvid news\, a raven flies over carrying a stick\, followed by another raven with a stick\, moving into the eucalyptus grove. The great horned owls\, the red shouldered hawks make no comment. \nIn 14th century news\, which I have been reading\, the Black Death kills between 30% and 50% of the population. On the bright side\, the feudal system begins to fracture. \nIn war news\, the war is still going on. \nIn radiology news\, the radiologist\, Japanese but born here after the war\, is very thoughtful & kind but says she doesn’t really get Zen. \nLoving the world we have\, that’s it! \nJoin us \n—John Tarrant \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with Guest Host Tess Beasley & Friends: Dissolving the Plot\, Discovering the Unforeseen
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nI remember a dream once in which the danger seemed certain\, but then a sliding door opened as if I were in a grocery store and a gaggle of turkeys wandered through. \nWhatever plot I’d been holding to suddenly gave way and the world stood open. \nBeing alive comes with plenty of good reasons to be afraid\, but having a practice means making way for the turkeys and other unexpected gifts of the mind to appear. \nAs we become more intimate with the world\, it shares its secrets with us. As we become less certain\, new pathways appear. \nJoin us Sunday for meditation\, music\, and stories of encountering the unforeseen. \n—Tess Beasley \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: In the Middle of Things—Silence
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nOn the left we have velociraptors\, above we have pterodactyls—not sure if my insurance will cover dinosaurs\, \nbut the mind is always running on\, now it’s sunshine and rain days\, a spring morning worth a thousand gold pieces says Sudong Po\, the time when foxes have their weddings\, and you have to peek at the procession from behind a tree. \nIn the middle we have silence. Silence which allows the madness to settle. \nHere’s the old spring koan: \nWe’re always talking about subject and object\nand even not talking is about subject and object\,\nhow do we get beyond subject and object? \nThe master said\, “I’m always thinking of the lakes in March\, partridges sing among the fragrant blossoms.” \nThe reverie of spring with its thousands of gifts is inside and outside. Let’s have that this Sunday. \nJoin us! SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Friends: How to Survive Interesting Times
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nYou can’t ignore the cruelty and you can’t panic and think your life is over. \nAlso\, strangely\, we can’t escape to Mars. \nGetting to Mars isn’t really getting into the universe. We enter reality by becoming aware of our own thoughts and feelings. Kindness for those we meet along the way is good\, too. Love. Modesty in what we can achieve is good. Accuracy and honesty are good. \nWe are here for a short time and we can love each other. Poetry and art are good too. \nIt’s good to know that your own life can be beautiful in all kinds of times. \nJoin us this Sunday. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nA student asked Dongshan\, “When cold and heat come\, how can we avoid them?”\nDongshan said\, “Why don’t you go to the place where there is no cold or heat?”\nThe student asked\, “Where’s the place with neither cold nor heat?”\nDongshan said\, “When it’s cold\, the cold kills you. When it’s hot\, the heat kills you.” \n—Blue Cliff Record Case 43 \nThings are changing quickly in our world. As the old arrangements fall apart\, what we can do is have a real\, spiritual life. \nWe just printed our beautiful new sutra books and included a quote from Basho\, “Never think that your life doesn’t count.” \nIt’s good to have a connection to the great matter. A true inner life shows us our place in the universe. \nWe hold the center and the vastness. \nJust as the daffodils of February do. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\n“Mummy\, why does it keep on changing?” asked the young rhino. “I mean it’s fire one minute and flood the next\, not to mention the hyenas.” \n“Yep.” \n“Why?” \n“First Noble Truth.” \n“What does that mean?” \n“It means that it’s like that. A dream\, a bubble\, a flash of lightning.” \n“Isn’t that\, well\, intense?” \n“Knowing about it helps. The mind is calm. \nEverything changes\, everything falls apart\, catches fire\, then drowns. \nA dream\, a bubble\, a flash of lightning.” \n“Mummy\, is there anything good about this?” \n“You can see that you are connected to everything in the universe\, the stars for example. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nLately in California the dream is fire\, the image of transformation. \nAllison grew up in the Palisades. \nDid your childhood house on Swathmore burn?\nYes it did\, the whole of Swathmore is gone.\nHow about ancient Aunt Betty’s house in the Red Zone near the cliffs?\nIt did not fall down\, but it burned yesterday.\nAnd the Corpus Christi Church?\nAh yes\, that too. \nThe park burned\, the library burned. \nA student asked Dasui\, “In the Kalpa fire when the universe is completely destroyed\, I’m still wondering\, is there something that won’t be destroyed?”\nDasui said\, “It will be destroyed.”\n“It will follow along with everything else?”\nDasui said\, “It will follow along with everything else.” \nMany intense things happen in the dream of our lives. \nJoin us for the practice of dream and fire. The newly released hardcover book with beautiful\, high-quality imagery is now available in the PZI Online Store. \nPrefer to listen? The audiobook is also available with narration by John himself. \nDonations of $250 or greater to the PZI year end fund will receive a signed copy! \n\nJohn Tarrant is a Zen teacher\, author\, and poet and is PZI’s founder and director. He is interested in Zen as a Way that transforms the mind and in the dance between innovation and tradition in both teaching and practice. \nRead John’s full bio here. \n\nZen as a set of rules and procedures is not so interesting to me. I learned Zen when we were still trying to find what worked in the West. And people now seem to find freedom more naturally than I had assumed during my own initial studies. \nMy experiments have led me to trust people more than I once did\, and to teach people to trust their own moves. To me this means that koans are not a gadget that you put all your effort into using. They’re an environment—you wander around and they teach you. You have to listen and look.
