SUMMARY:What Is This Light That Everybody Has? – Deep Sit Sunday Zen with John Tarrant & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nMeditation can’t be praised enough.\nThe benefits of generosity and discipline\,\nprayer\, self-reflection\, and practice\,\nhave their source in meditation.\n\nWith what we gain from just one sitting\,\nall our crimes are wiped away.  \n—Hakuin Ekaku \nEnlightenment happens inside this life that we have. It’s not some other more satisfactory life with special conditions. So you set off! \nYou go through one archway\, and then you go through a second\, and then a third archway\, and eventually your worries fall away\, though you didn’t ask them to\, all desperation falls away and any cause of suffering in the mind is illuminated. Life after life you have been doing this and it’s not a surprise that you come eventually to the Buddha\, who is sitting on an ordinary zafu smiling\, and Buddha says\, “Yes\, that’s it\, you are doing it alright\, just do zazen like that!” and happiness comes over you. \nMeditation is also extra good if you do it together with friends. \nJoin us this Sunday as we take up the koan: \nYunmen taught\, “Everybody has a light inside. When you’re looking for it\, you\ncan’t see; it’s obscured in the dimness. What is this light that everybody has?”\nHe answered his own question\, “The kitchen pantry\, the entrance gate.”\nThen he said\, “It’s better to have nothing than to have something good.” \n—Blue Cliff Record\, Case 86\n(transl. by John Tarrant & Joan Sutherland) \n—John Tarrant\, Roshi \n\nSchedule (ALL TIMES PACIFIC): \n9AM – 11AM – Meditation & Music with Open Temple Leaders \n11AM – 12PM – Meditation\, Poetry & Reflections with John Tarrant\, Tess Beasley & Friends \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI

SUMMARY:Special Event – Deep Sit Sunday Zen: Like a Buffalo Through a Window
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nThis Sunday we’ll extend the temple hours for another deep sit\, silence to sink into your bones. \nAs the mind settles and we pass through the usual chatter and obsessions\, more space appears and like stars in the relief of dusk\, more interesting questions come into view. \nWondering itself\, and the mystery of our own consciousness\, becomes less a problem to corral than simply a pleasure to investigate and companion. \nClarity appears and vanishes again\, and slowly\, slowly\, we notice we’re alive and beyond resolution. \nOne teacher put it like this: \nWuzi said\, “It’s like a buffalo passing through a latticed window. Its head\, horns\, and legs all pass through\, but why can’t its tail?” \nThe tail can be all that remains unanswered in our hearts; the annoying or destructive habits of mind and body we just can’t seem to break. It can be all we wish we’d somehow done differently; but to hold it as a given\, and come to know its blessing\, is the generosity of practice. \nOf this case in the Gateless Gate Collection\, Wumen penned the verse: \nIf it passes through\, it falls into a ditch;\nif it turns back\, it will be lost.\nThis tiny little tail —\nwhat a strange and wonderful thing it is!  \nJoin us for a morning out on the Great Plains. \n—Tess Beasley\, Roshi \n\nSchedule (ALL TIMES PACIFIC): \n9AM – 11AM – Meditation & Music with Open Temple Leaders \n11AM – 12PM – Meditation\, Poetry & Reflections with John Tarrant\, Tess Beasley & Friends \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:ANNUAL DAYLONG: Buddha's Life in Your Life Retreat with John Tarrant & Tess Beasley
DESCRIPTION:     \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat with John Tarrant & Tess Beasley\nSunday December 11\, 2022\n9:30 am – 4:00 pm Pacific Time \nLong ago\, in a kingdom far away\, in a great forest\, a man sat alone under a great\, spreading\, fig tree looking into the deepest matters. He had been a prince\, but now\, in desperation and hope\, he meditated deep into the night. As dawn approached\, his mind quieted\, he looked up and saw the morning star and cried out\, \nNow I see that all beings have the nature of the one who comes thus:\nOnly their delusions and attachments keep them from realizing this. \nOur retreat is on the anniversary of that event in early December as the old year winds down. \nThe Buddha’s discoveries take place in our own lives. The Buddha’s hardships and sorrow are definitely ours\, and the Buddha’s awakening is waiting for us to know it personally. It’s easy to think of the Buddha’s journey as something far off. But the journey lives on and through us. Each year we follow the paths out of the palace and meet dragons and hermits and milkmaids and the morning star. We see them in the path of our own destiny and the shape of our own faces. \nJohn Tarrant & Tess Beasley will be your guides\, along with PZI teachers and special guests. \nAll are welcome. \n\nRetreat Day Details (Pacific Time) \n9:30 am–12:30 pm:  Welcome\, koan meditation\, morning dharma talk\n12:30–1:30 pm:  Lunch break\n1:30– 4:00 pm:  Koan meditation\, afternoon dharma conversations\, closing ceremony \nSpecial Year’s End Retreat Fee: Members $75 /  Non-members $100 \nPZI Members: If you want to attend and are in need\, please don’t hesitate to request financial aid through a PZI Member Scholarship for a reduced fee that you can comfortably pay. Not a Member? Become one. \nQuestions? Contact our registrar\, Corey Hitchcock corey@pacificzen.org \n\n\n\n \n  \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple.\nWe love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
