SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with Jesse Cardin & Friends: The Mountains Are/Not Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Enlightenment is a slippery thief. It sneaks up when we’re not looking and *WHAM!* we’ve lost everything. But after a time\, it’s just like the old joke about playing a country song backward: except instead of getting your lover and your dog and your truck back\, you get your bad habits and your neuroses and your beef with your coworker back. Dogen describes it like this: \nBefore one studies Zen\, mountains are mountains and waters are waters; after a first glimpse into the truth of Zen\, mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters; after enlightenment\, mountains are once again mountains and waters once again waters. \nI don’t know about you\, but I came to Zen to get enlightened for good. I don’t want the mountains to go back to being mountains and the waters to go back to being waters. But if this is the case\, how do we proceed? \nJoin me. We’ll sit together and explore the great matter with music and joy and great silence. \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends: The Stone Woman Calls Us Back
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nA monk asked Hongzhi\, “What about the ones who’ve gone?”\nHongzhi said\, “White clouds rise to the top of the valleys\, blue peaks lean into the empty sky.”\nThe monk asked\, “What about the ones who return?”\nHongzhi said\, “Heads covered in white hair\, they leave the cliffs and valleys. In the dead of night they descend through the clouds to the market stalls.”\n“What about the ones who neither come nor go?”\n“The stone woman calls them back from their dream of the world.” \n—PZI Miscellanous Koans\, Case 34 \nLeaving the world is an essential stage in the path of Zen. Unmoored from the ballast of desire\, we dissolve into the clear solution of spirit. We rise and rise until we disappear into the night sky\, lost among the countless twinkling stars. \nBut the journey does not end there. The other half of our life lies in this world\, with its burdens and surprises and beautiful\, fragile bodies. And so we return bearing the fresh memory of our celestial ancestry\, to find the stars now scattered throughout deserts and cities. \nThe great joke in the end is that we’ve always been here\, listening to the stone woman as she calls us home. \nSee you Sunday\, \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends: Chaos! Disorder! Nothing to Rely On!
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nGuishan asked Yangshan\, “Suppose that out of the blue\, someone asks you\, ‘All sentient beings only have karmic consciousness\, boundless and with no foundation to rely on.’ How would you conduct an inquiry into this?”\nYangshan said\, “If a student like that came\, I’d call\, ‘Hey so and so!’\nWhen the student turns his head\, then I say\, ‘What is it?’\nThen I’d wait while she thinks about it.\nThen I’d say\, ‘Not only is karmic consciousness boundless but also there is no foundation to rely on.’”\nGuishan said\, “Good!” \n—Book of Serenity\, Case 37 \nYou\, what do you own the world?\nHow do you own disorder? \n—System of a Down\, Toxicity \n\nOh\, man. My mind the past few days has been a wreck! It gnaws on itself\, chases out after things\, and constantly generates the least helpful theories possible about what’s going on in my life. \nI got sick on the day my parents came to visit\, my 5–year–old kicked me out of my bed for the second night in a row\, and now my cats’ automatic litter box has gone haywire. \nIt feels like someone has taken the carefully arranged Scrabble board of my thoughts and dumped it upside–down. \nSo what’s the remedy\, Doctor? What can you prescribe me? \nChaos! Disorder! Nothing to rely on! \nSee you Sunday 😉 \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. SUMMARY:Sunday Zen with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends: No Reason To Be Happy
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nYunmen said\, “I’m not asking you about before the full moon. Come and say a word or two about after the full moon.”\nAnd he himself replied\, “Every day is a good day.” \n—The Blue Cliff Record Case 6 \nWhen I woke up this morning the air was hazy gray with smoke from our neighborhood volcano. I’m tired and my son is rambunctious and it’s getting on my nerves. The tiny bird that hit my window yesterday has flown off somewhere\, or at least I hope that’s why it’s not in the yard anymore. \nWhen I look inside\, I’m happy\, though not for any good reason. I’m in awe of the way the world just keeps showing up: trees and rain and small children and cars and impatience and political opinions and wondering what I’ll have for lunch. Maybe that’s reason enough. \nSee you Sunday. SUMMARY:WEDNESDAY ZEN: There Is Nothing I Dislike - with Jesse Cardin
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER\n\nWednesday Zen with Guest Host Jesse Cardin\n—There Is Nothing I Dislike\nHere I sit at the end of a long day.  I didn’t get a chance to meditate early this morning as I usually do\, or later this morning\, or this afternoon. I was a little worried about that. My wife worked longer than she said she would this morning\, and as I entertained our toddler I worried if I was going to get all my work done. That was irritating. \nMy attempts to connect with the pharmacy to transfer an important prescription were thwarted by some bizarre technological flaw that made my phone think Hawai’i phone numbers are international. That was frustrating. I ordered copies of my son’s birth certificate so he can start Pre-K\, but they likely won’t arrive for at least thirty days and we’re way behind the curve on getting him registered for school. That was disappointing. He will probably also need a more recent physical exam than we have\, and we don’t yet have health insurance in Hawai’i. That feels overwhelming. \nI could go on with my litany of minor misfortunes\, but I’m distracted by the rain outside\, which is coming in such exquisite swells. The coqui frogs usually wait for nightfall to begin their chorus\, but there is a single voice co-co-KEE-ing out of the forest. I wonder if he’s confused\, or in love\, or just being a contrarian. \nTonight we’ll go to the Cooper Community Center down the street\, where there’s going to be a “Cinco in Da Forest” celebration for Cinco de Mayo. I hear there will be margaritas. I’m a little anxious to go\, as I almost always am when faced with a group social event full of unknowns\, but usually it eases up once I get past my front door. \nAs I write this—which I didn’t think I was going to be able to because I’m so behind on everything—I notice none of it poses a problem. It’s not that I have to rationalize why things are the way they are or bully myself into looking on the bright side or pretend like I wasn’t bothered—I just don’t find myself in opposition to anything that has happened. I don’t have an explanation for why that is or a five-step plan to help you do that\, too. I just notice that it is. \nI’m very much looking forward to spending some time with you while David Weinstein is away. Please join me in hanging out with old Linji for a bit. What the hell is he talking about\, anyway? \nHope to see you there! \nJesse \n\n \nJoin us for a koan\, meditation\, and conversation. All are welcome. Register to participate. \nCOME JOIN US Wednesday at 7pm Pacific Time \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:SUNDAY ZEN: Gifts from the Far Ocean - with Guest Host Jesse Cardin & Friends
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nThe Kuling came from the far ocean. It looked like a sea bird but was really a ghost.   \nOne day it landed on the island of Pulap and spoke to the daughter of the chief there. \nIt said\, “I have eaten all the people living on the Marshall islands\, and I’ll eat everyone here too unless you feed me until I am full.” The brave girl gathered cooked taro and coconut milk and fed it to the Kuling. Its hunger now sated\, the Kuling said\, “Thank you for feeding me. Now I will teach you the sacred art of navigation.” \nLike the chief’s daughter\, we live in a world beyond our understanding. There can be a tendency to steel the heart against fear\, but to meet life without guile leaves us open to receiving all manner of unexpected aid. Attending to what is here now might be everything. \n—Jesse Cardin \n\n\n\n\n\n \nMeditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong\, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you\, for doors to open by themselves\, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead. \n\n\nWaking up is something we do together\, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.  \n—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI \nRegistration is FREE or you may elect to donate $10.\n\nDana and donations are gratefully accepted.\nOnce you register\, you’ll receive a PZI link for access to:\nSunday Zen at 10:30 am Pacific Time \n*The Firefox browser may not allow you to access PZI registration buttons. Please try an alternate one\, like Chrome or Safari. \nJohn Tarrant returns to Sunday Zen on March 26th.
