Audio: John Tarrant Roshi interviewed by host David Chadwick

Recorded in December 2021 for the Cuke Podcast.

About the host:

David Chadwick came to San Francisco in 1966 to study Zen with the Soto master Shunryu Suzuki Roshi at San Francisco Zen Center. He was ordained as a priest in 1971 before Suzuki Roshi’s death that year, and worked in the Zen Center’s operations for a number of years thereafter. Since then, David has written a series of books about Suzuki Roshi, most notably the acclaimed biography Crooked Cucumber: The Life and Zen Teaching of Shunryu Suzuki. He has also written an account of his own four years spent in a Japanese monastery, called Thank You and OK! An American Zen Failure in Japan.

On that very funny and poignant book:

Thank You & OK is one of the great classics of American Zen, and one of the most astute books about Japan ever written by a foreigner.
