In the old days there were sixteen bodhisattvas
They all got into the bath together and realized the cause of water.
They called out, “This subtle touch reveals the light that is in everything.
We have reached the place where the sons and daughters of the Buddha live.”
—The Blue Cliff Record Case 78
Unhappiness is all about being separate, constructing ourselves as a separate device in the universe. A bath, though, cleanses us and dissolves pain; it is the most part of tears, ocean, and of our own cells. All the time, beneath our ideas and troubles, we are being carried along by a great current. Don’t forget to wash behind your ears, as my mother said.

When we enter the temple together, there is a mysterious field effect. We are companions on the road and walking the road—we are lighter, funnier and at peace.
