Once Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn’t know he was Zhuangzi. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuangzi. But he didn’t know if he was Zhuangzi who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi. Between Zhuangzi and a butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things.

Our impossible problems become dreams and play. Each piece of the universe is a gate into freedom, into loving the small things.

Come and explore the transformation of things in retreat this Summer.

Entering the Work of Zhuangzi

Our Summer retreat is a deep exploration of the most important matters with silence, teachings, and intimate conversations with teachers. Mt. Madonna is a Hindu temple with wonderful places to walk. The season is full of light filtered through redwoods.

Gradually, through retreats and koans, the mind grows more friendly and the heart more open. Gradually, you notice that you are not wanting your life to be different; it is taking care of itself nicely. Sesshin means to touch the heart, to touch the mind. It’s a transformative experience. That’s what this retreat is about.
