A Meditation and Koan Retreat

For whom do you bathe and make yourself beautiful?
The voice of the cuckoo is calling you home.
Hundreds of flowers fall, yet the voice is not stilled.
Even in the jumbled mountains, it is still calling clearly.
– Dongshan

There are real and deep and important questions in life like, What am I? What do I love? Where is my true home? Am I welcome here on the earth? There is also something else, a voice that is always calling, insistent, trying at last to get your attention. The answers aren’t where you’re looking! it says. Meditation and the imaginative possibilities of koan practice are one of the ways to discover that voice calling inside you.

A koan meditation retreat provides an environment where insight can happen and responses can come from surprising places. There will be quiet sitting meditation, writing, walking, conversation and teaching. There’s a chance to transcend what you thought were the limitations of yourself and the world, inside your own life, the one you have right here.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? And what’s that voice calling you home?

Friday evening (7-9pm) is an introduction to working with koans and meditation and to the koan of the retreat.

Saturday is an all day (10-4:00) workshop, vegetarian lunch provided.
