Exploring the Journey at Year’s End
Fire, hurricane, earthquake, flood, threats of war: it’s been a wild year.
How do we imagine life after a dark dream? We start by settling down, going inwards, setting our hearts to rest. It’s a kind of purification. We can put down what we are carrying, we can welcome what we are turning toward. Early December is when we remember the Buddha’s enlightenment.
The darkness and stillness of winter and the new year reveals its own treasures. The world does what it does but we can make peace with our own minds. Forgiveness and kindness can befriend us.
This year, we will explore the Buddha’s life – as a metaphor for the most human path of traveling through darkness into the light. As we go down and come up, transformation is always going on, especially when we think it’s not. The great story of the Buddha wakes up our own adaptability and resilience and our imagination about our own journey,.
Your life is for you, so come on the journey with us. Step into all that’s ahead, with a big Buddhist story coupled with koan meditations, intimate conversation, deep inquiry, wisdom talks, wandering walks, and a warm-hearted group – all wishing to gently say goodbye to 2017 and warmly welcome the New Year!
We’ll be enjoying a social dinner gathering at a private home in Oakland to deepen connections with everyone in the workshop and gather together in preparation for New Year’s Eve.
Note: This event will become an annual New Year’s retreat at Pacific Zen Institute.
