Birds were few,

and waters distant:
the voice of the cicada.

—Buson

As late summer sun burnishes the edge of autumn, we might hear harvest sounds in the vineyard at night, or the song of the golden-crowned sparrow, upon arriving from a four-thousand-mile migration north, at its very same perch in the garden.

September is a time of turning and return, the harvest moon and the autumnal equinox, a deep and beautiful occasion to sit together in candlelit meditation. A cricket chorus plays, and we hear the rustling of sycamores under silent stars . . .

Meditation is a way of listening to the night, to the ancients, and to our own golden life singing.

—Allison, Tess, Jesse, & Michelle
