Whatever he was asked, Juzhi just held up one finger.
—Blue Cliff Record Case 19
Yesterday I went on a hike with my wife. My back has been bothering me and about halfway through the hike I thought, “I’d better go back.” But I kept my mouth shut and kept going. Today I’m in terrible pain and can hardly stand up straight.
Why is it so difficult sometimes to just say what’s true?
I love you.
I don’t like tomatoes.
We might be met with disapproval or punishment or—perhaps even more disturbing—no reaction at all. But the other possibility is that our words will open the world in some way. To include everything that appears is to trust the completeness of this moment.
As it says in the precept about not lying, “Everything is wet with dew and the truth is ready to harvest.” Like the innocent child who points out the emperor’s nakedness, acknowledging what’s here is a boon to everyone.
Please join me for a one-day online meditation retreat. We’ll meditate, conversate, and discover the source of Juzhi’s one-finger Zen.
