A One-Day Koan Meditation Retreat in San Antonio, Texas

Layman P’ang was sitting in his thatched cottage one day, studying Buddhist scriptures. “Difficult, difficult,” he suddenly exclaimed, “like trying to scatter ten measures of sesame seed all over a tree!”
“Easy, easy,” returned Mrs. P’ang, “just like touching your feet to the ground when you get out of bed.”

“Neither difficult nor easy,” said Lingzhao. “On the tip of every blade of grass, the old masters’ meaning.”

The world presents itself like a proud child, as if to shout, “Look at me! Look at me!” A glint of sunlight on golden hair, the whippoorwill’s trill at dusk, broken branches beside a country road—invitations overlooked in search of something a little more dazzling. But the entirety of the Buddha’s teachings are already here for your enjoyment, no assembly required. Not sure what I mean? Check the tip of any blade of grass.

Koans don’t just offer us a new point of view on life, but the possibility of stepping out of all points of view. There’s no good reason to do this other than it will open you up to the subtle, indescribably beauty inside everything. Now, is that difficult or easy?

Join Jesse Cardin, Sensei, for a day of meditation, teaching, and conversation. No previous experience with meditation necessary. Bring your own lunch and curiosity. Koans provided.
