Featured: Entangling Vines Case 99 - Jiashan's State of Mind

A student asked Jiashan, “What is Jiashan’s state of mind?”
Jiashan answered, “Monkeys, clasping their young to their breasts, return beyond the green peaks: a bird with a flower in its beak alights before the blue grotto.”

Then the student asked Yunmen, “But when it’s not the things I can see, and it’s not what they’re doing, what is it?”
Yunmen said, “Say it upside down.”

—The Blue Cliff Record, Case 15

This koan—actually all koans—are an invitation for your response; they are situational. Giving you a situation, they
ask, “What now?” The koan is not looking for some “correct” or sanctioned response, it doesn’t work like that. The koan elicits your response, the words and actions that arise for you, here and now.

Join David Parks Roshi for a koan, meditation, dharma talk, & conversation. All are welcome. Register to participate.
