The Great Way Is Not Difficult

Zhaozhou taught, “’The great way isn’t difficult if you don’t pick and choose.’ As soon as I speak,
you’ll think, ‘That’s picking and choosing,’ or ‘That’s clear.’ But I don’t identify with clarity. Can you live like that?”
A student asked, “If you don’t identify with clarity, what do you live by?”
“I don’t know.”

Inside the light of meditation is a kind of modesty and simplicity, it flows, we can rest in it without much effort.

There is nothing that doesn’t contain it. A stranger lifts her arm on a train, the sunlight catches her elbow, and suddenly here we are, inside a Vermeer interior in the Netherlands in the 17th century. The moment spreads out and we realize we’ve always been inside it.

Gardening

A student asked Jiashan, “What if you sweep away the dust and see the Buddha?”
Jiashan said, “You have to wield your sword. If you don’t, you’ll be like a fisherman stuck in a tangle of reeds, unable to catch a single fish.”

The student then asked Shishuang, “What if you sweep away the dust and see the Buddha?”
Shishuang said, “The Buddha has no country. Where will you meet her?”

The student reported this to Jiashan. Jiashan stepped up to the rostrum and said, “As far as gardening tools go, Shishuang is inferior to me, but for discourse on the deepest reality, he’s a hundred steps ahead of me.”

—Book of Serenity, Case 68

Join us this Sunday, harmonizing with the Dao.

Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.

Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.
