The Great Way Is Not Difficult

Zhaozhou taught, “’The great way isn’t difficult if you don’t pick and choose.’ As soon as I speak,
you’ll think, ‘That’s picking and choosing,’ or ‘That’s clear.’ But I don’t identify with clarity. Can you live like that?”
A student asked, “If you don’t identify with clarity, what do you live by?”
“I don’t know.”

With what you gain from just one sitting, all your crimes are wiped away.
—from Hakuin’s Praise Song for Meditation

With the turning of the year comes the age-old desire for renewal—the longing for a clean slate and opportunity to start anew, with a life free from hindrances and full of the things we long for.

Trouble is, this can become an endless self-improvement project where we try to substitute one self with another, better one, still holding tight to beliefs about ourselves and the world.

Zen invites us to set aside ideas of good-and-bad and bathe in the original silence that has held each part of the universe from the very beginning. It is renewal born of resting into our inexhaustible true nature and of glimpsing vast forces always revealing our path home.

—Allison, Tess, Jesse, & Michelle

We remain in a PZI Zen Online format for these weekly gatherings, in this time of transition and gradual reopening. Join us in the PZI Digital Temple on Sunday.

This event is held in lieu of John Tarrant’s usual Sunday program.
