Featured Koan: The Land of Demons

A great minister asked, "I've been reading the sutras—what is meant by, 'A fierce wind has blown the ship off course, setting it drifting toward the land of the Rakshasas'?"
The teacher responded, "Why ask something like that?"
The great minister's face went pale with that response.
And the teacher repeated, "A fierce wind has blown the ship off course, setting it drifting toward the land of the Rakshasas!"
The minister understood.

Wherever you are, just take the position of host, and your place will be a true one. —Linji

Meditation is something to learn in order to make your way through the inner and outer forces of your life, and the events great and small. Life is a great and marvelous mystery, but it is not something to be afraid of. So meditation is really a way to inhabit your own life, and love it and love the people you are with on this journey. It is a way to be fully human. We can all do it, there is no one who is disqualified or wrong in the world of meditation. There are no reservations in life, we are here, and again we are here. We can all manage that. That is why meditation is associated with freedom and joy.

Join me on Sunday for adventures in the nature of mind and heart.

Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.
