Featured Koan: The Four Boundless Vows

I vow to wake all the beings of the world,
I vow to set endless heartache to rest,
I vow to walk though every wisdom gate,
I vow to live the great Buddha Way.

Practices for Feeling the Time with John Tarrant

A student asked Yunmen, “What is the pure and everlasting body of reality?”
Yunmen said, “A fence of flowers and healing herbs.”
The student asked, “What’s it like when I reach there?”
Yunmen said, “Golden-haired lion!”

When we look at the world up close, we can see flowers and healing herbs. When we look from the view in which we are as old as the universe, it’s all a lion with golden hair. Furthermore, the tip of each hair of the lion is itself a galaxy. How could we come to harm or make a mistake?

Welcome

Meditation is a place where you are welcome, and this is a way to do it together. Koan meditation is based on uncertainty, and was invented for a difficult era. For these reasons, it helps us to be friendly with our time—to find a way to make decisions, to love the life we have. With all the difficulties, it’s good to be alive.

—John Tarrant Roshi & All of us at PZI

We are in a PZI Zen Online format for these weekly gatherings, while we remain sequestered to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Join us in the PZI Digital Temple on Sunday mornings. All are welcome. Register to participate.
