Featured: PZI Miscellaneous Koans, Case 37 — Peach Blossoms

For thirty years I searched for a master swordsman.
How many times did the leaves fall, and the branches burst into bud?
But from the moment I saw the peach blossoms, I’ve had no doubts.

The Way Things Are Is Mysterious: Zen Refuge Vows as Koans of Everyday Life

Taken as rules, Zen precepts spur the mind in its favorite activities—avoiding or assigning fault, determining right and wrong. Taken as koans, however, these precept vows open a vast territory for discovering awakening in moments unexpected; moments full of the very transgressions we’re sure are keeping us from peace.

Entering this field of possibility and belonging—long known as refuge in temple halls—begins with not-knowing. Navigating depends on leaving behind the familiar gauges of praise and blame.

Your expression of the actual body is the harbor and the weir.
This is the most important thing in the world.
Its power comes from the ocean of essential nature.
It is beyond explanation.

—Allison Atwill Roshi, Tess Beasley Sensei, & Jess Cardin Roshi

We are in a PZI Zen Online format for these weekly gatherings, while we remain sequestered to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Join us in the PZI Digital Temple on Sunday mornings. All are welcome. Register to participate.
