The Great Way Is Not Difficult

Zhaozhou taught, “’The great way isn’t difficult if you don’t pick and choose.’ As soon as I speak,
you’ll think, ‘That’s picking and choosing,’ or ‘That’s clear.’ But I don’t identify with clarity. Can you live like that?”
A student asked, “If you don’t identify with clarity, what do you live by?”
“I don’t know.”

Spring comes with its flowers,
autumn with the moon,
summer with breezes,
winter with snow.
When useless things don’t hang in your mind,
that is your best season.

—Gateless Gate Case 19, Verse

Jesse Cardin Roshi

An unripe pear is tough and bitter, and departs the stem only reluctantly. Leave it on the tree too long, and its flesh turns to brown mush on the branch. When ready, the fruit relaxes off the stem and into our waiting hand, peering up at us contentedly from between our swaddling fingers.

We sleep, we wake, we sleep again. In the morning, the fog drapes itself over the bay until the sun arrives to usher it away.

Joy gives way to sorrow gives way to confusion gives way to joy again. The rhythm of this life carries us like a song.

It’s good to know what time we are in. To hear the rhythm in things—when to plant, when to harvest, when to wait—this is the gift of practice.

Looking forward to spending Sunday with you.

—Jesse Cardin

John Tarrant returns on Sunday, August 28th

Meditation is not a task with a known goal. It’s something you can’t do wrong, a chance for the things of this world to come towards you and to meet you, for doors to open by themselves, and for us to see where the ancient paths lead.

Waking up is something we do together, in the online temple on Sunday. We love it when you join us.

—John Tarrant Roshi and all of us at PZI
