For some years in my Zen practice I was under the impression that awakening was a commodity so rare, so seldom experienced, that we might have but one chance in all our lifetime to grab that brass ring. And if we missed it—well, good luck. Especially since becoming a teacher I no longer feel that awakening is in short supply; each branch of coral is ringing with life.
