Monday Meditation & Talk with Jon Joseph Roshi: Tea with Tathagata
December 7, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pmFree – $10
Changqing once said, “It’s better to say that the enlightened saints live in greed, hatred, and ignorance than to say that the Tathagata (the Buddha, ‘the one who has come thus’) has two kinds of speech. I’m not saying that the Tathagata doesn’t have speech, I’m just saying that he doesn’t have two kinds of speech.”
Baofu asked, “What is the Tathagata’s speech?”
“After a struggle, a deaf person succeeds in hearing.”
Baofu said, “I feel as though you’re speaking from a secondary level.”
“Well, what is the Tathagata’s speech?”
Baofu answered, “Let’s go have tea.”
—The Blue Cliff Record, Case 95
Last week we talked about “small waves”—simple introductions into the world of awakening that begin to affirm for ourselves the deepest truth: We and all things in the Universe are not two. These small waves are important, because with time we realize that each bit of awakening is all of awakening. The nature that we have seen—in Japanese, kensho means “to see the nature”—is the nature of the Universe, it is Buddha Nature.
