Featured: Entangling Vines Case 99 - Jiashan's State of Mind

A student asked Jiashan, “What is Jiashan’s state of mind?”
Jiashan answered, “Monkeys, clasping their young to their breasts, return beyond the green peaks: a bird with a flower in its beak alights before the blue grotto.”

The old woman who ran the traveler’s inn where Deshan had stopped to get refreshments said, “Your Reverence, what sort of literature do you have there in your cart?”
Deshan said, “Notes and commentaries on the Diamond Sutra.”
She said, “I hear the Diamond Sutra says, ‘Past mind cannot be grasped, present mind cannot be grasped, future mind cannot be grasped.’ Which mind does your Reverence intend to refresh?”
Deshan was dumbfounded and unable to answer.
He asked, “Is there a teacher of Zen in this neighborhood?” The woman said, “The priest Lungtan is about half a mile from here.” And Deshan headed there.

— Gateless Gate (Wumenguan), Case 28, Wumen’s commentary

This is a wonderful segment from the story of Deshan Xuanjian’s awakening. An expert on the Diamond Sutra, he traveled hundreds of miles from north to south China to challenge what he thought was the “heretical school” of Zen. His encounter with the woman at the inn pointed him in a new direction, towards a profound change of heart.
