Crooked Fishing, Straight Hook: with Jon Joseph

Basically, a straight hook seeks fish that turn away from life.

—Book of Serenity, Case 18, Hongzhi’s verse

I have a confession to make: In working with students on hundreds of koans over the years, I have developed some favorites in the curriculum. I also have a couple that I have struggled to embrace; one of my least favorite has been the above “Straight Hook” koan, which is in Pacific Zen’s Miscellaneous collection.

So I asked myself, why have I been turning away from the straight hook?
