Pick up the plow with empty hands.
—Farmer Fu, PZI Miscellanous Koans, Case 24a
This koan is the first of a triptych of koans attributed to Farmer Fu, otherwise known as Fu Dashi. I recently brought the other two parts of the triptych—about a flowing bridge and about walking while riding.
With empty hands I pick up the hoe.
As I walk, I ride the water buffalo.
As I cross the bridge, the bridge flows,
the water is still.
Then another koan, which has four parts, a quadriptych, fell into my empty hands. In response to the question “What does awakening look like?” Jiashan gave the images of an awl, a mirror, a willow seed and a butterfly. When that koan paid my empty hands a visit, Farmer Fu’s images came into focus as his descriptions of awakening. More mysterious than Jiashan’s, evoking the mystery that we become intimate with when we pick up our lives with empty hands.
Join us for a koan, meditation, dharma talk, & conversation. All are welcome. Register to participate.
