Featured Koan: The Land of Demons

A great minister asked, "I've been reading the sutras—what is meant by, 'A fierce wind has blown the ship off course, setting it drifting toward the land of the Rakshasas'?"
The teacher responded, "Why ask something like that?"
The great minister's face went pale with that response.
And the teacher repeated, "A fierce wind has blown the ship off course, setting it drifting toward the land of the Rakshasas!"
The minister understood.

Mujaku was widowed at 32. She couldn’t get over her grief and became a nun. She asked the teacher Bukko, “What is Zen?”
Bukko replied, “The heart of the one who asks is Zen; you can’t get it from someone else’s words.”
At that moment, a deer at a nearby stream gave a cry. The teacher asked, “Where is that deer?”
The nun listened.
The teacher shouted and asked, “Who is hearing?”

—PZI Miscellaneous Koans, Case 42

We come to life and practice with a deep question, rooted in our dissatisfaction, what we see as problems in life. The question lives in us before we are even aware of it, functioning outside of our awareness. Then, through life experience, practice, and speaking with teachers, this profound heart question opens to us and carries us deeper, ever deeper, into our dissatisfactions and their release. We open to life as it is, questions and all.
