A Two-Day Meditation Retreat in Phoenix
With Jon Joseph, Roshi
A teacher asked a student one time, “Where are you going?”
The student replied, “On pilgrimage.”
“Why are you on pilgrimage?”
The student said, “I don’t know.”
The teacher replied, “Not knowing is most intimate.”
We live in a very need-to-know culture: Will my retirement account go up or fail from here? Is that a new ugly mole on my skin? Does my mate, angry yesterday, really love me? To be sure, caring and planning are all important parts of constructing a stable life. But that construction project ~ with all its fears and concerns ~ can overwhelm us and prevent us from enjoying true intimacy in our lives. We lose our soft edge against the universe. Buddhists call that delusion.
The wonderful koan exchange above, between the teacher Dizang and student Fayan, is an invitation to explore not knowing, which is the heart of a pilgrim. Through seeking that intimacy in our lives and for our lives, we can regain our sense of freedom, our sense of kinship with the people around us. Our sense of kinship with ourselves. Shall we go on pilgrimage together?
This commuter retreat, sponsored by Pacific Zen and Desert Lotus Zen, will be held at the beautiful Heard Museum, a 1920s-era Southwestern center dedicated to the advancement of Native American art. We will break for lunch catered by the in-house café, which serves a wide range of fresh and original meal choices. Early Saturday evening, if you wish to join us, we will do a short meditation hike into the desert of South Mountain and later share an al fresco dinner as the sun sets and the coyotes emerge to view the waxing crescent moon. On Sunday morning we will meet again at the Heard and finish by the late afternoon.
