From the time of the Buddha, the teaching has depended for its survival on two things: first of all, on the fact that it works — seeing through delusion brings joy; and second, on the generosity and kindness of all those whom it has touched. These two things are linked. When delusions drop away, kindness appears. The idea that we are separate personalities striving against each other for survival falls away too and it becomes natural to be generous with each other. The koans we work with are designed to help us discover this truth and integrate it into our lives.
